Matthews with a hat trick in Indiana's first loss in 11 matches
Princeton University | Princeton, New Jersey Result: Indiana 6, Princeton 7 |
PRINCETON, N.J. -The Indiana women's water polo team took part in the CWPA Championship for the second year in a row on Sunday afternoon, again meeting Princeton in the final game. The Hoosiers had a 4-3 advantage at the end of the first half, but the Tigers regained the lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter and never looked back. Indiana finished second after falling in the championship match, 7-6.
Kelly Matthews led the Hoosiers in scoring with three goals, her second hat trick of the CWPA tournament. Jennifer Beadle, Candyce Schroeder, and Colleen McNaught netted one goal each. Three Hoosiers were credited with assists in the game--Ellie Stott, Shelby Taylor, and Alexis Jones.
The IU defense was a tough nut to crack for the Tigers. Seven Hoosiers were credited with at least one steal, and Indiana keeper Mary Campbell recorded five saves. The Hoosier defense combined for four penalty kills on Princeton power plays.
Princeton opened scoring three minutes into the game on their first power play advantage. Indiana took their next possession down the field, drew an exclusion, and found Matthews for the equalizer. Princeton found their second on another power play to retake the lead, but Indiana responded in the same manner as their first goal, from Matthews off of an exclusion drawn by Stott. By the end of the first period, neither team had an advantage on the other in a 2-2 tie.
Stott drew another ejection midway through the second, which led to Indiana's first five-meter penalty opportunity. Matthews hurled the penalty shot into the back of the cage for Indiana's first lead of the game with just under six minutes in the half. Princeton tied things up on a counterattack, but Beadle gave the Hoosiers the lead just before halftime. The freshman utility player battled for a rebound off of an Indiana shot, then tossed the loose ball into the back of the cage to give the Hoosiers a 4-3 lead at the midpoint.
Princeton didn't hesitate to level the tally, scoring their fourth goal on the Tigers' first possession of the second half. Indiana patiently built the attack and found their go-ahead goal two minutes later, a score by McNaught via Taylor. Princeton closed the gap with their third power play goal of the game with two minutes remaining in the quarter. Two airtight defenses prevented any further scoring in the third. With the game tied at 5-5, a winner would be decided in the final period.
Princeton's offense followed their tying goal to close the third with two more unanswered goals in the fourth, giving the Tigers a two-goal lead with three and a half minutes to play. Indiana managed to erase half of their deficit on a Schroeder goal by way of Jones, but fell short of forcing overtime. The Tigers took the win, and their fourth CWPA title, over the Indiana Hoosiers.
THREE HOOSIERS RECEIVE CWPA TOURNAMENT HONORS
The 2015 CWPA All-Tournament team was announced following the CWPA Championship Game. Candyce Schroeder and Kelly Matthews were selected to the CWPA All-Tournament first team, and IU keeper Mary Campbell received CWPA All-Tournament second team honors. In addition to her first team selection, Matthews was named the CWPA Championship Rookie of the Year.
Matthews netted seven goals and served one assist in Indiana's three-game tournament campaign. Matthews adds this award to her three CWPA Rookie of the Week selections, an All-CWPA second team selection, and the CWPA Rookie of the Year award for her performance during the regular season.
Schroeder scored five goals and served one assist in her tournament run. Schroeder was also a recipient of second team All-CWPA honors, as well as one CWPA Player of the Week selection in 2015.
Campbell recorded 27 saves in Indiana's three tournament games for an average of nine saves per match. She led a stingy Indiana defense that allowed an average of 6.3 goals per game in the tournament.
