Vrooman, Pieroni highlight the day at U.S. National Championships
KAZAN, Russia – The final day of the 2015 FINA World Championships saw former IU men's swimmer Cody Miller help the United States earn a gold medal in the 4x100 meter medley relay. Miller swam a stellar time of 59.23 in the prelims to help propel the U.S. into the finals.
Although he did not race in the finals, he is still awarded a medal because he competed in the preliminary heats.
Shifting back to San Antonio for the U.S. Swimming Phillips 66 National Championships, former IU standout Lindsay Vrooman continued to show that she is one of the top women's freestyle swimmers in the country. Her time of 8:40.12 in the prelims of the 800-meter free was the sixth fastest and qualifies her for the finals, which take place on Monday night.
Junior Stephanie Marchuk also competed in the 800 free and touched the wall with a time of 8:46.03, which was the 18th-fastest time of the prelims.
Sophomore Blake Pieroni advanced to the B finals of the 100-meter free with his time of 49.73. Then in the B final race, Pieroni improved his time to 49.58, which left him in third place in the B final. His time in the final ranks as the second-fastest time in IU long course history while his prelim heat time is now the fourth-fastest at IU and gives Pieroni each of the five top times in the event in program history.
Mike Hurley, who graduated from IU in May, posted a time of 2:03.15 in the 200-meter medley, which was good for 23rd overall in the prelims.
In the 200 back, a trio of Hoosiers represented the Cream and Crimson, with sophomore Rachel Matsumura logging the top time of the three at 2:16.25. Former Hoosier Cynthia Pammett was next at 2:18.12 while sophomore Marie Chamberlain followed with her time of 2:19.07.
The 200 fly contingent from IU was led by junior Bailey Pressey and her time of 2:15.35. Nearly two seconds behind Pressey was junior Olivia Barker (2:17.34), senior Haley Lips (2:17.81) and sophomore Reagan Cook (2:18.76).
The USA Swimming Phillips 66 National Championships conclude on Monday, Aug. 10, in San Antonio. Complete results can be found at USASwimming.org.
