L’Hommedieu Named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer goalkeeper Sarah L'Hommedieu has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday.
The accolade is the second of the year for the Hudson, Ohio native, who earned Freshman and Defensive Player of the Week honors on Aug. 30. It also marks the first time a Hoosier has received Freshman of the Week honors twice in a season since Sarah Stone did so in 2012.
"The maturity of Sarah and her confidence has continued to grow," said head coach Amy Berbary. "She works so hard day in and day out on the training field and I'm so glad to see that she's reaped the benefits of it, not only with these personal accolades but with the success of the team. She may be one of the most humble players that I've coached in a long time. She goes into games with a clear mind, a clear head and just tries to do whatever she can to help this team win."
Over the weekend, L'Hommedieu registered a total of 15 saves against No. 13 Penn State and No. 24 Rutgers. L'Hommedieu leads the Big Ten in total saves with 72 and is 37th in the country, including having the third-most stops amongst freshmen. In addition, she sits at 12th in IU history in single-season saves.
Against the Nittany Lions on Thursday night, L'Hommedieu shut out Penn State in the final 102 minutes of action as the Hoosiers drew with the defending national champions, 1-1.
On Sunday, L'Hommedieu surrendered two early goals but bounced back to tie her career high with eight saves as Indiana earned a 2-2 comeback draw. Her biggest stop of the game came on a Scarlet Knight penalty kick in the 75th minute.
"That's the life of a goalkeeper – you have to have a very short term memory," said assistant and goalkeepers coach Sergio Gonzalez. "I think she didn't let either one of those goals affect her confidence and presence. She made some tremendous saves to keep the game where it was and allow us to get back in."
L'Hommedieu and the Hoosiers return to action on Thursday as they travel to Ohio State. First kick is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
