BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – For the second week in a row, Indiana sophomore goalkeeper Noëlle Rother has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week. It's the sixth weekly honor in the last two seasons for Rother, but just the first time in her career that she has earned back-to-back weekly accolades.
"She really builds up our confidence in the backfield," said Rother's teammate, Kate Barber, after Indiana's shutout win at No. 12 Michigan. "She takes charge back there, and she's saved us on many occasions. We really look to her throughout our defense."
Rother posted the Hoosiers' third shutout of the season, the sixth of her career, in Friday's 1-0 win at No. 12 Michigan. She led the defense with seven saves, lifting Indiana to their first road win over a top-15 conference foe since 2006.
On Sunday at Michigan State, Rother compiled another valiant effort in Indiana's 1-0 loss at Ralph Young Field. Rother saved eight shot attempts in the game, conceding the only goal after making the initial save.
Rother has cemented herself as one of the top goalkeepers in the conference nearing the end of her second season. She leads the Big Ten in saves per game (5.69) and ranks third in save percentage (.740). With three games remaining in the regular season, Rother has made 91 saves with two complete shutouts.
The Hoosiers return to action on Friday, October 21 in their only single-game weekend of the season, at home versus Ohio State. The game will set off at 3:00 p.m. ET and air online at BTN2Go.com. Prior to the start of the game, Indiana will recognize their 2016 senior class—Kate Barber, Morgan Dye, Malia Fujisawa, and Mollie Getzfread—before they take the turf for the final home game of their career.
