Indiana vs. Michigan State
October 1, 2016
• The Hoosiers picked up their first win over a ranked opponent since a 31-27 victory at No. 18 Missouri on Sept. 20, 2014. This is the second win against a ranked opponent under head coach Kevin Wilson.
• IU last defeated a ranked Big Ten opponent on Oct. 14, 2006, a 31-28 triumph over No. 15 Iowa at Memorial Stadium.
• The victory over the Spartans is the Hoosiers' first win against a ranked Big Ten opponent since beating No. 15 Iowa, 31-28, in 2006 at Memorial Stadium. It is also their last win at home over a ranked opponent.
• The win was the first for IU in overtime since beating Purdue, 34-31, in overtime in 2010. The Hoosiers are now 3-6 all-time in overtime.
• Indiana won the Old Brass Spittoon for the first time since 2006, when IU beat MSU, 46-21, at Memorial Stadium. The game marked just the second overtime game in the 63-game series, with IU improving to 1-1 in those contests (1998).
• After halftime, Indiana did not commit a penalty, did not turn the ball over and did not allow a sack.
• For the second straight week, Tegray Scales led the Hoosiers in tackles. The junior linebacker finished with a game-high and career-high-tying 13 stops, his second consecutive double-digit effort and the third of his career, to go along with a TFL.
• Redshirt sophomore defensive end Nile Sykes recovered the first fumble of his career in the second quarter on an errant Michigan State snap. The Hoosiers now have three fumble recoveries in 2016.
• Marcus Oliver's first quarter forced fumble matched the program career mark (9). The redshirt junior is tied with Jammie Kirlew (2006-09) and Herana-Daze Jones (2001-04). Oliver has assisted on 12 takeaways in his career (2 interceptions and 1 recovery).
• Fifth-year senior Ricky Jones collected his second straight 100-yard game and the fifth of his career with five receptions for 124 yards. Jones posted 208 yards against Wake Forest last weekend. His five 100-yarders are tied for 10th on IU's all-time list.
• Wide receiver Mitchell Paige got the Hoosiers on the board with :52 remaining in the third quarter when he hit quarterback Richard Lagow on a 5-yard throwback pass. Paige also added one touchdown reception. The fifth-year senior finished the day with 48 yards on three receptions.
• The last Indiana receiver to throw a touchdown was O.J. Conner, a 51-yarder to Antwaan Randle El at Cincinnati on Sept. 26, 1998. The last Indiana quarterback to collect a receiving TD was Kellen Lewis, a 71-yarder at Iowa on Sept. 29, 2007.
• Lagow completed 16 of his 26 passes on the night for 276 yards and two touchdowns. Lagow is averaging 319.5 passing yards per game this season.
• Devine Redding rushed for 100 yards on 19 carries (5.3 average). This marks his sixth 100-yard game of his career. The junior has rushed for 100 or more yards in six of his last seven games. Redding also caught two passes out of the backfield for 14 yards.
• True freshman Tyler Natee had a career-high 10 carries for a career-best 38 yards.
• Luke Timian had three receptions for 52 yards. The redshirt sophomore had a career-long 40-yard catch that set up the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter.
• Redshirt junior Patrick Dougherty thwarted Michigan State's first scoring attempt with his first career blocked field goal. Indiana's last blocked field goal came against Western Kentucky on Sept. 19, 2015 (Nick Mangieri). Dougherty sacked MSU quarterback Tyler O'Connor during the overtime period for his first career sack.
• On the very next play, Nate Hoff recorded his first sack of the year. The redshirt junior had five total tackles on the day.
• Redshirt junior Marcus Oliver (4th time in 2016), fifth-year senior Ricky Jones (3rd time), sophomore Jonathan Crawford (2nd time) and redshirt junior Chase Dutra (1st time) served as this evening's game captains.
• Indiana won the coin toss for the second time this season and deferred until the second half for the second time this season.
• IU won its second Big Ten opener under head coach Kevin Wilson (Penn State, Oct. 5, 2013).
