Postgame Quotes
Indiana at Penn State
October 28, 2016
Indiana head coach Amanda Janney
Opening Statement…
"We really responded after last weekend. To come out today against such a talented team was impressive for our lead-in to next week. We wanted to use this game as preparation for next week [at the Big Ten Tournament], and the team played so strong. We won the second half in terms of stats and goals, and that's a great way for us to enter next week."
On Kate Barber breaking two Indiana season scoring records with two goals…
"We're really proud of her tonight. Her contributions all over the field helped our team play well tonight. She's making intercepts all over the field, and her execution on corners was phenomenal. That's how a senior captain leads, and she was a great leader for us tonight. I'm so thrilled that she got the records."
On Katie Johnson's first career start in goal…
"Katie Johnson did great tonight. She made some huge saves for us, including the stroke save and a save on a drag flick. Some great reaction saves off of some hard shots. Penn State has some really talented forwards, and she gave such a great effort. It's a good sign for our team that she can step up when asked, and I'm happy for her to have such a great performance tonight."
On Andi Jackson's transition to the starting lineup for the first time this season…
"She's another spark for us on the side midfield. She's making good decisions on the ball under pressure, and she's been improving drastically every weekend. We're in a position to put Morgan [Dye] as a forward, and maybe Andi will step in as a right mid and provide that attacking down the right side that we needed."
On playing the defending national champions, Syracuse, on Sunday…
"We're focused on our team and playing Indiana hockey, making sure that we're executing our plays and strategies that we're focused on. We know this is preparation for the Big Ten Tournament, and we couldn't ask for better competition to prepare us. We know that they're a talented team, and as an athlete you want to play the best in the nation so this is a great opportunity for us."
Senior Kate Barber
On breaking Indiana's single-season records for goals and total points…
"That's been the theme for this season [leaving it all on the field]. Every game, we've come out as a senior class and left it all on the field. We drilled that mindset in this week coming into our last regular season weekend, and this is probably one of the best games of hockey we've played all season. We're taking pride in that and everything we've accomplished. It feels great."
On Katie Johnson's effort in goal, her first career start…
"She played out of her mind this game. Coming in, we knew she was going to be able to step up to the challenge and she did just that. After seeing her make that stroke save, it gave us all the confidence in her, and she's going to continue to do great things for this program this year and next."
On winning the second half over Penn State…
"This is a great weekend to end our regular season going into the Big Ten Tournament. These are two games that will really prepare us for next weekend and increase our speed of play."
Junior Katie Johnson
On her first career start tonight…
"I felt comfortable, because I have a really supportive team in front of me. All 10 girls were really supportive, going into this weekend open-minded with me back there. They really worked and listened well."
On communicating with the back line…
"Penn State has really quick forwards, so we knew that there would be a lot of interchanging. One of our goals coming into this game was to focus on switching off on defense so their forwards would be doing the running. It went really well—they were holding great lines and stepping up when they needed to, and they forced the ball to a low angle so it was easier for me to make saves. They did really well with communication."
On confidence going into Sunday's game at Syracuse…
"It's really great that I got the opportunity to play these tough teams. I wouldn't have chosen another weekend to play. We played really well tonight. We meshed well, and I have confidence in everyone playing with me on the back line. We're ready, and we'll step up to the challenge when it comes."
