BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana volleyball team took the first set, 25-14 and didn't looked back as they beat their highest ranked opponent since the 2013 season with a 3-1 upset (25-14, 21-25, 25-16, 25-23) over No. 13 Michigan on Saturday at University Gym.
Senior Jazzmine McDonald led the Hoosiers with a career-high 15 kills on 20 attempts for a .700 hitting percentage and added 10 blocks for a double-double.
The Hoosiers posted 21 blocks on the night, their third best total for a four-set match in program history.
"I thought we played a great match last night against No. 15 Michigan State and we took that momentum into tonight," IU head coach Sherry Dunbar-Kruzan said. "We will enjoy this, that is why you play sports and why you compete in the best conference in the country. I'm proud of our kids for the fight they showed and getting this great team win."
Senior Taylor Lebo tallied 15 digs and freshman Deyshia Lofton added eight blocks in the match. Redshirt freshman Kendall Beerman hit .440 with 14 kills for Indiana.
The Hoosiers (15-10, 4-8) beat their highest ranked opponent, since beating No. 10 Michigan State on Oct. 26, 2013.
The Hoosiers came out strong in the first set and hit .500 with 13 kills and forced Michigan (18-6, 7-5) into eight attack errors and a .033 hitting percentage. Indiana picked up five blocks in the opening set and won it 25-14.
A crucial point in the match came in the second set as the Hoosiers trailed Michigan 20-9.
IU head coach Sherry Dunbar-Kruzan called it a pivotal point in the match with the Hoosiers showing fight as they battled back and went on a 10-3 run with three kills by McDonald in that stretch. Although the Hoosiers went on to drop the second set, 25-21, it set the stage for the remainder of the match.
In the third set the Indiana offense picked up with the Hoosiers hitting .321 with 12 kills and three errors. The Hoosiers got two aces from freshman Victoria Brisack in the set to swing momentum to their side.
With Indiana leading 16-13 in the set the Hoosiers scored five of the next seven points to take a 21-14 lead on a kill from Beerman. The Hoosiers went on to win the third set, 25-16 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth set was played close with six ties, which included a point where Michigan tied the match at 16 with a kill. The Hoosiers were able to gain breathing room with three straight points to build a 19-16 lead. Michigan kept it close and with back-to-back kills tied the set at 23.
Indiana got a kill from Beerman to bring themselves within one point of the victory at 24-23 in the fourth set. Brisack served on match point and after a few back and fourth rallies, Lebo made a great dig but it went back over to Michigan.
On the Michigan attack the Hoosiers block got a touch and Brisack dug a ball that then went to Lebo, who had a backset to Beerman, who slammed it down for the kill to give Indiana the match victory.
