BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – For the first time in program history, the Indiana Women's Basketball team is ranked in the AP Preseason Top 25, coming in at No. 23 in the release of the poll on Tuesday morning.
Since poll records have been kept since 1992-93, Indiana has only appeared in the rankings three times (1992-93, 1993-94, 2013-14), which all came during the regular season. IU has never made an appearance in the preseason top 25 in school history.
The Hoosiers continue to add to their list of preseason accomplishments, as they were selected to finish third in the Big Ten this season in a vote by coaches and media announced in late October. In addition, they garnered 51 points in the USA Today Coaches Preseason Top 25 to come in at No. 27 to begin the season.
Indiana returns all five starters and 10 letterwinners from the 2015-16 campaign, where it advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round and tied a program-high 21 wins. All-Big Ten first team selection Tyra Buss (18.8 ppg., 5.0 rpg., 4.4 apg., 2.1 spg.) and honorable mention Amanda Cahill (14.7 ppg., 8.5 rpg., 49.7% 3FG) both return for their junior campaigns. Senior guard Karlee McBride and Alexis Gassion along with forward Jenn Anderson lead a veteran group that also features three freshman and fifth-year senior Amber Deane to the mix this season.
Notre Dame topped the AP's Preseason Top 25, with Baylor, UConn, South Carolina and Louisville rounding out the top five. IU is one of three Big Ten teams to receive a spot in the poll, with Maryland coming in at No. 6 and Ohio State at No. 7.
The 2016-17 season starts with exhibition play on Sunday versus UIndy at 2 p.m. ET and the regular season tips on Friday, November 11 against Presbyterian at 7 p.m.
