
Blackmon Jr., Jones Earn Weekly Honors

CHICAGO – The Big Ten Conference announced the first weekly honors for the 2016-17 season on Monday and a pair of Hoosiers received recognition after a 103-99 overtime win against No. 2/3 Kansas in the State Farm Armed Forces Classic. Junior guard James Blackmon Jr. was named Big Ten Co-Player of the Week while Curtis Jones garnered Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week plaudits. Additionally, Blackmon Jr. was named National Player of the Week by NBCSports.com.
Blackmon, Jr., who returned from knee surgery that cost him the final 22 games of the 2015-16 season, scored 22 of his 26 points in the second half and overtime His three pointer with 2:30 gave the Hoosiers the lead for good in the overtime period. In the second half and overtime, he was 6-for-12 from the field, 4-for-7 from 3-point range and 6-for-6 from the line. He also had six rebounds.
It's the 14th game of his career scoring at least 20 points. He went 4-of-8 from the 3-point line and 6-for-7 at the free throw line while also grabbing six rebounds. He now has 750 points in 47 career games played. He is averaging 16.0 points in his career, which is the second-highest mark of any Hoosier player in the Tom Crean Era. Cody Zeller averaged 16.1 points in two seasons.
The last Hoosier to receive Big Ten Player of the Week honors was Kevin Yogi Ferrell on Feb. 29, 2016. Troy Williams also earned Player of the Week honors on Feb. 22, making it three times in the last four weeks that the conference has offered the award that an IU player has won it.
Jones came off the bench and scored 15 points in 16 minutes, including seven points in overtime to lead the Hoosiers to the win over the Jayhawks in Honolulu. He scored five points in a one minute span in the first half to give IU its first lead in the game with a 3-pointer and a driving layup. In the overtime, he hit a 3-pointer with 1:45 to go to extend the lead to 97-93 for the Hoosiers. With IU up by two with 16 seconds to play, Jones knocked in two free throws and with Kansas pressing down two with five seconds to play, Jones took the inbounds after breaking away from the press and sealed the victory with a slam dunk.
The last IU freshman to win the weekly award from the Big Ten was Thomas Bryant on Jan. 11, 2016.
The win over No. 2/3 Kansas makes it the highest ranked opponent the Hoosiers have defeated in a season opener since beating No. 2 UCLA in St. Louis in 1975. Over the last five-plus years, Indiana is tied for the second most wins in the country against AP Top 3 teams.
