ABOUT THE HILLTOPPERS
The Hilltoppers have split a pair of games to open the 2016-17 season with a win over Alabama A&M to open the season before falling to UT Arlington on Wednesday. They are led by a trio of double figure scorers early in the year with junior forward Ivy Brown (19.0 ppg., 7.5 rpg.), junior forward Tashia Brown (14.0 ppg., 7.5 rpg.) and redshirt sophomore Jaycee Coe leading the way (10.5 ppg.). As a team, WKU has shot 47.1 percent from the field in its first two games and averages 82.0 points per contest. Saturday's contest will also be the first meeting of the two programs in 15 years, last meeting in the Stanford Tournament in the 2001-02 season.
SERIES HISTORY
Western Kentucky leads the series, 4-2
Last meeting: W, 85-70 (11/17/01 – Palo Alto, Calif.)
ESCAPING VICTORIOUS
In a back-and-forth battle, the Indiana Hoosiers left Tennessee with a win as it edged out Chattanooga, 79-76, on Thursday night. Junior guard Tyra Buss dropped a game-high 23 points including a 4-for-7 effort from long range as she led another quartet of players to score in double figures. With the win, Indiana hands Chattanooga back-to-back losses at home, something it hadn't done inside McKenzie Arena since 2004-05 as they also lost to No. 19 Florida on Monday.
APPROACHING 700
With just one more win, Indiana Women's Basketball can reach the 700-win plateau in program history. The program, which began its 46th season in 2016-17, holds an overall record of 699-599 heading into Saturday's game at Western Kentucky.
GASSION NEXT TO 1,000
Senior guard Alexis Gassion can become the 25th member of the 1,000 point club as she sits just 31 points (969) away from the career mark heading into Saturday's game. Gassion has propelled her career numbers as she has scored in double figures in the last two games, tying a career-high 22 in the win over Vanderbilt and 15 on Thursday at Chattanooga. Gassion can join junior guard Tyra Buss this season to reach the career mark in the record book and the first duo to score 1,000 points in the same season since Jamie Braun and Whitey Thomas did it in 2008-09.
50 PERCENT AND BETTER
In its first three games of the 2016-17 season, Indiana has shot 50 percent or better from the field in each of its victories. They hold a team field goal percentage of 52.5 percent heading into Saturday's game at Western Kentucky
40 AND COUNTING
With her game-high 23 points in the win over Chattanooga, junior guard Tyra Buss increased her streak of double-figure scoring games to 40 - which dates back to her freshman season. It's also one of the longest streaks since 1996-97 when Quacy Barnes tallied 37 games straight in double figures.
INSIDE JOB
Indiana has showed its a threat in the post, scoring at least 46 points or more in the paint in all three games. In each of the Hoosiers three wins, paint points have accounted for 51 percent or more of its scoring including a whopping 70 percent of it against Presbyterian in the season opener.
STICKING TO NO. 23
Indiana kept its place in the Associated Press Top 25 with the release of the Week 1 rankings on Monday afternoon. IU also narrowly missed out in the USA Today Coaches Top 25 Week 1 poll on Tuesday, as it earned 59 points and sits at No. 26 overall. For the first time in program history, IU has garnered a preseason top 25 ranking as it came in at No. 23 in the AP Preseason Top 25 on Nov. 1. The Hoosiers have appeared in the national polls just three times in program history (1992-93, 1993-94, 2013-14) and marked the first time the program has been ranked entering the regular season.
