BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Junior guard Tyra Buss has been named to the Naismith Trophy Women's Preseason Watch List, announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club on Wednesday morning.
Buss is one of 50 players from around the country and one of nine players from the Big Ten on the list for women's college basketball's player of the year honor. Named in honor of Dr. James Naismith, the creator of the game of basketball, the first Naismith trophy was awarded in 1969 to UCLA's Lew Alcindor, later known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The trophy was sculpted by Marty C. Dawe of Atlanta and has become among the most prestigious national honors awarded each year to top basketball players in the nation. The Women's Player of the Year Award was first given to Anne Donovan of Old Dominion University in 1983.
Each year the club's board publishes the "Naismith Watch" list that is made up of the top 50 players to watch in men's and women's college basketball. The organization also releases a list of 30 mid-season Naismith candidates. At the end of the season the Naismith Trophy is awarded to the player of the year in men's and women's college basketball. A national voting academy of leading basketball coaches, administrators and journalists narrows the group down to four finalists based on player performance throughout the season. The final four Naismith finalists will make up the ballot and the player of the year is voted on by the group.
The Mt. Carmel, Ill. continues to take the Indiana Hoosiers to new heights as she became the fastest player to 1,000 career points earlier this season. She leads IU with a team-high 18.3 points, a team-high 3.3 steals, 3.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds through six games played in the 2016-17 season. Buss shoots 45 percent from the floor and 43.3 percent from 3-point range and averages 32 minutes per game. She has scored in double-figures in every game this season including three 20-plus point performances and holds a streak of 43 consecutive games in double-figure scoring.
Buss is just seven points shy of cracking the top 20 in all-time scoring as she currently has scored 1,092 points in her career and just 17 steals and 27 assists from the top 10 in program history in both categories. Buss is coming off a sophomore campaign that led to First Team All-Big Ten honors – the first for an IU player since 2006 – as she helped lead the Hoosiers to the NCAA Second Round.
Buss and Indiana return to the court on Thursday when it travels to North Carolina State for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Tipoff in Reynolds Coliseum is set for 7 p.m. ET on ACC Network Extra.
