BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) announced the matchups for this year's NWCA Division I National Championship Dual Series on Monday morning. The Indiana Hoosiers drew the Southern Conference co-champions, the Appalachian State Mountaineers, for their dual on Sunday, February 21 at 1:00 p.m. ET.
"It's nice that we got selected to take part in this series," said Indiana head coach Duane Goldman. "I hope that we can get out there and compete a littler harder, regardless of what happens, and get back to what got us here in the first place. For us, that was being feisty and competitive, and we just need to get back on track."
The matchup will allow Hoosier fans to experience a new dual opponent in Appalachian State. The Hoosiers and Mountaineers will clash in their first-ever dual meet at University Gymnasium.
Indiana finished the 2015-16 regular season with a 6-6 overall dual record, going 3-6 in the Big Ten. Their Big Ten win total is the highest mark since Indiana's 2009-10 season. They're led by No. 11 Nate Jackson (174) and No. 19 Elijah Oliver (125), who have both notched 26 wins this season with 6-3 records in the Big Ten.
Appalachian State finished the season in a three-way tie for Southern Conference supremacy with a 6-1 conference dual record, and they stand at 11-4 overall. Like Indiana, they feature a pair of ranked grapplers: No. 6 Denzel Dejournette (HWT) and No. 18 Nick Kee (174). Dejournette amassed a 24-2 overall record in his 2015-16 campaign, while Kee is 24-5 on the season.
Tickets can be purchased on the day of the event at University Gymnasium. Adult tickets will be $5, and youth tickets (18 or younger) will be $3. You can also catch all the action online via BTN Plus (subscription required).
This year, the NWCA National Dual Championship series pits the top eight Big Ten teams against six dual champions from the seven other Division I conferences, plus two at-large selections based on national ranking. The Big Ten teams—Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio State, Penn State, and Rutgers—will serve as the hosts for the eight-dual series.
The opposing conference dual champions include Oklahoma State (Big 12), Virginia Tech (ACC), Lehigh (EIWA), Missouri (MAC), Appalachian State (Southern Conference), and Edinboro (EWL). The remaining at-large selections were awarded to ACC runner-up North Carolina State and Big 12 runner-up Iowa State.
