ROSEMONT, Ill. – Indiana Softball pitcher Josie Wood was named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Wood picked up two wins at the Panther Invitational, both of which came in complete games.
During the four-game tournament, Wood tossed 20.2 innings, striking out 16 batters and allowing just three earned runs.
Against Delaware on Friday, Wood allowed just one earned run on six hits in the effort and tossed five shutout innings until the Blue Hens got on the board in the sixth frame.
In Indiana's extra-innings marathon victory against Holy Cross, Wood threw all 12.0 innings, tying the fifth-most for a single pitcher at Indiana and the most since Monica Wright tossed 12.0 on May 14, 2010. In the win, Wood faced 44 batters, giving up just one run with 10 strikeouts and no walks. Beginning in the ninth, she retired 11 batters in a row, including registering three straight 1-2-3 innings to keep the game tied up at 1-1 before senior Kelsey Dotson hit a walk-off home run in the 12th to win the game.
The last Indiana freshman to receive this weekly honor was CaraMia Tsirigos, who earned it in March 2014.
