ATLANTA – The No. 13-ranked Indiana Hoosiers had the best day in program history on Friday at the 2016 NCAA Championships in Atlanta, Ga.
After three days of competition, the Hoosiers sit in eighth place in the team standings with a total score of 153 points – the best of the Big Ten teams. Georgia leads heading in to the final day with a total of 185 points.
Indiana's Lilly King cemented herself as the greatest 100 breaststroke swimmer in history, becoming the first woman to break the 57-second barrier with her NCAA Championship winning time of 56.85.
King broke her own American, NCAA, NCAA Meet, U.S. Open, Indiana school, Big Ten and Georgia Tech Pool record of 57.15 she set in the Friday morning prelims.
The Evansville, Ind. native becomes the seventh woman to win a NCAA title at Indiana, joining Jessica Parratto (10m, 2015), Brooklyn Snodgrass (200 back, 2014), Christina Loukas (3m, 2009), Cassandra Cardinell (10m, 2005), Kate Fesenko (200 back, 2010) and Kimiko Hirai (1m, 1996).
The freshman is the first IU breaststroker – male or female – to win a NCAA National Championship since Don McKenzie won the 100 breast for the Hoosier men in 1969.
Also with King's championship, Indiana becomes the first women's swimming and diving program in Big Ten history to win a NCAA title three-straight years – Lilly King in 2016, Jessica Parratto in 2015 and Brooklyn Snodgrass in 2014.
Not to be outdone, classmate Miranda Tucker was spectacular in the Championship Final of the 100 breast, coming in third place with a personal-best time of 58.10 to earn her first All-America honor.
Tucker's time breaks a five-year old USA Swimming 17-18 National Age Group record previously held by Breeja Larson (58.51). Tucker's mark ties her as the 10th-best performer in the event in history, while the freshman's time ranks fourth-all-time at Indiana.
Haley Lips and Kennedy Goss both made the Championship Final of the 200 freestyle for the Hoosiers, placing seventh and eighth overall, respectively. Lips touched the wall in a time of 1:43.72 – the fourth-fastest time in Indiana history – while Goss timed in at 1:44.75.
The All-America honor is the fifth in the career for Lips, while Goss earned her seventh All-America accolade of her young IU career and the fourth this year.
Senior Lacey Houser earned the first All-America accolade of her career, placing eighth in the Championship Final of the 3-meter dive with a score of 297.60. The Championship Final is the first in the career of Houser.
