BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - There was no sign of hesitation in Teri Moren's voice. No second thoughts. No doubts.
She never wavered.
Is this team good enough to make the NCAA Tournament?
"Oh, there's no question," Moren said. "I don't know how you leave this group out. No question. We should be in."
The question arose after Northwestern bounced Indiana from the Big Ten Tournament Tournament, 79-73, Friday afternoon at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The loss at least temporarily ended Indiana's season until they learn their NCAA Tournament fate March 14.
"Today we didn't play our best game, but we think throughout the season we proved that we deserve to be in that spot in the top-64 teams in the country," sophomore forward Amanda Cahill said. "I'm still really proud of my team and our coaches and what we've accomplished so far, but we don't want to hang our hat on that."
Indiana hopes what it accomplished in the regular season outweighs an early conference tournament exit in which the Hoosiers say they played out of character at the wrong time. Northwestern's 46 percent shooting from the floor, including a 51.5 percent clip in the second half, was too much for Indiana to match in the Big Ten Tournament's win-or-go-home format.
Given the opportunity to speak with the tournament selection committee and make a case for themselves, players' responses included the team's 20 regular season wins, their unbeaten 14-0 mark at Assembly Hall and three wins against ranked opponents. One of those ranked wins came on the road against the same Northwestern team that sent IU home before the weekend.
Junior center Jenn Anderson brought up Indiana's 81-65 win over then-No. 18 Michigan State in early January in particular. As far as she's concerned, that result is more than enough evidence to prove her team can compete at the national level.
"We can hang with big teams and we can beat big teams," Anderson said. "I think that's what we need to keep in the back of our minds, and that's what we need to bring into whatever postseason opportunity we get."
All Indiana can do now is wait. What happens between now and Selection Monday is completely out of the Hoosiers' control and at the discretion of the NCAA Tournament selection committee that sets the field.
For now, Indiana will return to practice and prepare as if they're the NCAA Tournament team they believe they are.
And wait to hear if their name is called on ESPN March 14 just after 7 p.m.
"This is a special group," Anderson said. "I just hope they pick us."
