IU Ties For First At Dale England Cup, Loses on Tiebreaker
4/23/2016 6:38:00 PM | Women's Rowing
BLOOMINGTON, Indiana – The No. 14 Indiana rowing team wrapped up the Eighth Annual Dale England Cup on Lake Lemon Saturday afternoon, and when all the racing was complete, the Hoosiers, No. 17 Notre Dame and Duke were all tied with 108 points.
The tiebreaker, determined prior to the start of Saturday's races, would be the better of the combined times for each 1V8 boat in their two Saturday heats. When both teams added up those times, it was Notre Dame that edged Indiana by 0.85 seconds and took home the trophy while Duke finished third. Navy finished fourth with 39 points.
The morning session began with the 1V8 crews on the water first. At the end of 2,000 meters, it was the Hoosiers that crossed the finish line just 0.3 seconds ahead of Notre Dame with Duke finishing third and Navy fourth.
The next race was the 2V8 and, as improbable as it seems, that race ended up with the exact same margin of victory, but this time Duke came out on top with a time of 6:47.3 and the Hoosiers were second with a time of 6:47.6 while Notre Dame was third and Navy was fourth.
In the 1V4 morning heat, Duke was able to pull out a 2.0 second win over Indiana (7:53.4) while Navy was third and Notre Dame was fourth. The Hoosiers also finished second in the 2V4 race with a time of 7:49.3, which was 3.9 seconds behind the heat winner, Notre Dame.
Notre Dame would beat Indiana by 22 seconds in the 1N8/3V8 race, as the Hoosiers posted a time of 7:34.0, and the Fighting Irish also topped IU in the 2N8/4V8 heat, as IU posted a time of 7:44.6 and that was 23.2 seconds behind and the 3N8 crew was 47.1 seconds off the pace set by Notre Dame.
After a break in the action, the racing resumed in the afternoon with the second 2V4 heat of the day. Indiana switched crews and had the crew that raced in the 1V4 heat in the morning take part in the 2V4 heat in the afternoon. That crew would come away with a time of 7:40.8, beating Notre dame by 0.7 seconds with the 3V4 for the IU coming in third at 7:54.3 and Duke finishing fourth.
In the 1V4 heat, the Hoosiers were represented by the crew that participated in the 2V4 heat in the morning. That crew would finish third, 5.0 seconds behind Duke, who finished first and Notre Dame, who finished second.
With Indiana hanging on to a slim lead in team points, it would all come down to the 2V8 and 1V8 races. The 2V8 race was up first and it was a neck-and-neck battle between Indiana, Notre dame and Duke. At the line, it would be Duke crossing first in 6:45.5 and Notre Dame just 0.7 seconds behind them and the Hoosiers crossing in third place with a time of 6:48.0.
The final race of the day was going to determine the winner of the Dale England Cup and it was the 1V8's racing for the second time in a matter of hours. What was a narrow 0.3 second win for Indiana in the morning turned into a 1.1 second loss for the Hoosiers in the afternoon, as Notre Dame was able to get the win while Duke finished third.
Next up for Indiana will be the Big Ten Championships in Indianapolis on May 14-15.
