Student-Athletes Honored at Spirit of Indiana Showcase

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics honored its student-athletes at the sixth-annual Spirit of Indiana Showcase on Monday, April 25, at the Indiana University Auditorium.
The Showcase honored student-athletes with year-end awards from 2015 and 2016. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Spirit of Indiana Director's Award, given by Vice President and Director of Athletics Fred Glass to two student-athletes that best represent The Spirit of Indiana: 24 Sports, 1 Team.
This years honorees are Rebecca Brougher (Rowing) and Femi Hollinger-Janzen (Men's Soccer).
"Thank you for being here and embracing and living out 24 sports, 1 team," Glass said. "This is a unique event and time for us to come together and celebrate our achievements and show our talents."
Athletically, Brougher was the 2 seat on the 1V8 last year as a junior, helping the Hoosiers to a third place showing at the Big Ten Championship and an 11th place finish in the NCAA Championship, the second straight NCAA appearance in program history. During her sophomore year, she missed most of the season with an injury, but worked diligently on her rehab and was able to come back to join the 1V4 at the Big Ten Championships, where the crew would finish fourth and advance to the team's first-ever NCAA Championship.
"This is such an honor," Brougher said. "I wouldn't trade my experience at IU for anything."
"Becca embodies everything that the Spirit of Indiana talks about," IU head coach Steve Peterson said. "She works very had at being the best student-athlete she can be, she is a leader both on the water and off of it, and she is a great ambassador for Indiana University wherever she goes."
Hollinger-Janzen recently completed his tremendous, four-year career with the Hoosiers. The Goshen, Ind. native was a two-time First-Team All-Big Ten selection and a two-time All-Region honoree – including first-team accolades this past year. He was drafted in the third round of the 2016 MLS SuperDraft by the New England Revolution.
"I'm really honored and I appreciate this award," Hollinger-Janzen said. "I miss everyone at IU and I have had a great experience here."
"We are very excited to have Femi honored as this years recipient of the prestigious Directors Award," IU head coach Todd Yeagley said. "Femi embodies the spirit of Indiana. He has impacted so many people in a positive way during his time at IU. He is a special young man. Femi is a great teammate and fiend to all."
The department also recognized the Big Ten Medal of Honor recipients. The award is given to a person who strives for excellence in both athletics and academics.
The Big Ten, the nation's oldest collegiate conference, commemorates the 101st anniversary of a very unique tradition - the Big Ten Medal of Honor. The conference's most exclusive award was the first of its kind in intercollegiate athletics to recognize academic and athletic excellence. The Big Ten Medal of Honor was first awarded in 1915 to one student-athlete from the graduating class of each university who had "attained the greatest proficiency in athletics and scholastic work." Big Ten schools currently feature almost 9,500 student-athletes, but only 28 earn this prestigious award on an annual basis. In the 101 years of the Medal of Honor, almost 1,400 student-athletes have earned this distinction.
The women's honoree this year is Nicole Volgraf (Field Hockey) and the men's honoree Nick Zeisloft (Men's Basketball).
Volgraf served as one of Indiana's team captains during her senior season in 2015, when the Hoosiers reached their highest Big Ten Conference win total in program history on their way to a third-place finish in conference. She netted 16 goals in her career, which ranks 12th all-time in Indiana history. From her sophomore to her senior season, Volgraf earned three Academic All-Big Ten honors and three NFHCA National Academic Squad selections, and won the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award her senior season.
A product of Lyons Township High School in Illinois, Zeisloft is a graduate transfer who came to Indiana from Illinois State prior to the 2014-15 season. He was a key contributor to the Hoosiers 2016 Big Ten Championship team. He appeared in every game the past two years and was regarded as one of the top three-point shooters in the Big Ten and in the country. His 43.5% career accuracy from long distance is the third highest of any Hoosier player over the past 20 seasons. He averaged 6.6 points a game in two seasons and has made more than 200 three-point field goals during his collegiate career. He will receive his master's degree in the Kelley School of Business next week. He earned Academic All-Big Ten honors and has a 3.5 grade point average.
In addition to the Spirit of Indiana Director's Award and Big Ten Medal of Honor, the following honors were presented:
