UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Indiana Softball saw its stay in the Big Ten Tournament come to an end on Friday evening as the Hoosiers fell to No. 2 Michigan in five innings, 10-0.
Michigan (45-4, 21-2 Big Ten), who came into the weekend as the top seed in the tournament, went ahead early as the Wolverines plated a pair of runs in the first inning. After Sierra Lawrence drew a leadoff walk and Sierra Romero was hit by a pitch from freshman Josie Wood, Kelly Christner singled to load the bases. Tera Blanco then hit a long single to right to bring in Lawrence and Romero.
Indiana senior Kelsey Dotson looked to answer as she knocked the team's first hit of the game on a one-out single down the left field line, but the next two Hoosiers went down swinging to end the frame.
The Wolverines then put up a five-run second inning, capped by a three-run homer from Kelsey Susalla to push the lead to 7-0. RBI singles by Lawrence and Christner started the scoring for Michigan, setting the stage for Susalla's shot.
An RBI single by Abby Ramirez and back-to-back RBI fielder's choices from Romero and Christner plated the final three Michigan runs in the third.
The Hoosiers (29-25, 10-13 Big Ten) used consecutive walks to junior CaraMia Tsirigos and senior Michelle Huber to put two on with one out in the fourth, but a double play ball ended the Indiana inning.
Sophomore Taylor Uden picked up IU's second hit of the night with a single to lead off the fifth, but the Hoosiers couldn't capitalize as the game ended early via the run-rule.
The meeting came on the heels of Indiana's 4-0 victory against Wisconsin on Thursday, marking the first time since 2006 the Hoosiers have won a Big Ten Tournament game. Additionally, Indiana's 29 victories this season is the most for the program since a 30-win season in 2012.
Michigan advances to tomorrow's semifinal as the Wolverines will face Penn State at 3:30 p.m. for a spot in Saturday evening's championship contest.
