BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana head women's basketball coach Teri Moren announced the addition of Amber Deane to the 2016-17 roster on Tuesday. Deane is joining IU from Dayton and will be eligible to play next season for the Hoosiers in her final year of eligibility as a graduate transfer.
The 5-10 guard from Lathrup Village, Mich. appeared in 104 games for the Flyers over the last four years as her 2015-16 season was cut short due to injury just nine games into the year. She tallied 1,104 points during her time at Dayton while averaging 11.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.0 steals per game. Deane helped lead the Flyers to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
"We are excited to add Amber to our roster," Moren said. "Amber has great experience, having made deep postseason runs. She is an outstanding player who has played against really good competition for the past four years. She is able to score at all three levels – outside, midrange and getting to the rim. Along with her offensive skill set, she is a willing defender. What we like best about Amber is her ability to get out and run in transition. She is going to fit in really well with our returning players as we continue to develop this program."
Before her injury last December, Deane was leading UD in scoring 15.3 points per game while shooting 46.0 percent from the field and 80.9 percent from the free throw line with 4.1 rebounds per game. She started in each of the nine games she appeared in last year and was on the Naismith Award midseason watch list of top 50 players in the country. Deane was granted a medical redshirt for the 2015-16 season.
In 2014-15, Deane helped lead Dayton on a run to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament as she appeared in all 35 games for the Flyers that season. She came off the bench in 32 contests to average 10.5 points per game while nailing 38.7 percent of her attempts from beyond the arc. Deane was named Atlantic 10 Sixth Woman of the Year and became the 23rd player in Dayton history to score 1,000 career points.
Prior to her sophomore year in the summer of 2013, Deane was one of 34 players nationally who were invited to the USA Basketball U19 World Championship training camp.
In 2013-14, Deane started 27 of the 29 games she played in and averaged 13.2 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. She scored in double figures in 21 contests and had four double-doubles.
Deane was named A-10 Rookie of the Year as a freshman in 2012-13 as she led the team and conference in field goal percentage (55.6 percent) while averaging 9.9 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. She started all 31 games for the Flyers and helped Dayton to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
She played high school basketball at Detroit Country Day and was part of the 2009 Michigan state championship team. DCD won four consecutive district and regional championships during her four years there as she was a two-time Class B All-State First Team selection.
Deane graduated from Dayton with a bachelor's degree in English and she will make the move to Bloomington in June to join the team and begin work toward her master's degree.
