
Pieroni, Miller Qualify for Finals at U.S. Olympic Trials

OMAHA, Neb. – Indiana University swimming had another outstanding day at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Neb. on Wednesday as two swimmers qualified for Championship Finals on Thursday night.
"Another awesome night here in Omaha for the Indiana Hoosiers," Indiana head swimming coach Ray Looze remarked. "We started off the evening with Blake Pieroni going from 11th seed to seventh seed to make the final tomorrow which gives him a chance to make the Olympic team as they take six spots to Rio for the relay. Later in the session, we had Cody Miller move up from No. 6 to No. 4 in the 200 breaststroke with a near best time. Thursday is going to be real exciting with preliminaries and some finals with high stakes."
Blake Pieroni had an amazing day for the Hoosiers, posting two lifetime-bests in the 100 freestyle to qualify for Thursday night's Championship Final. In the prelims, Pieroni qualified 11th overall for the semifinals with a then personal-best time of 49.39.
In Wednesday night's semifinal, Pieroni made the turn at the 50 in seventh place, but turned it on in the final 25 meters, closing fast to place fifth in the heat with a lifetime-best mark of 49.07. Pieroni will be the No. 7 seed in the Championship Final on Thursday night. Pieroni entered the Trials as the No. 23 seed in the event.
After earning his ticket to Rio Monday by placing second in the 100 breaststroke, IU alum Cody Miller continued his outstanding week by qualifying fourth overall for Thursday night's 200 breaststroke Championship Final.
After swimming a 2:12.80 in the prelims, Miller cut almost three seconds of his time in the semifinals, touching the wall in a time of 2:09.91.
Earlier in prelims, IU had three women place in the top-50 of the women's 200 butterfly, led by Bailey Pressey, who tied for 37th with a time of 2:15.26. Gia Dalesandro tied for 40th with a mark of 2:15.40, while Olivia Barker finished 48th in 2:15.93.
In the men's 200 breast prelims, Tanner Kurz placed 31st with a time of 2:16.96, while Cody Taylor finished 68th in 2:19.70. In the men's 100 freestyle, Daniel Kanorr finished 82nd with a mark of 51.62.
The 2016 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials will continue on Thursday morning at 11 a.m. ET at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha. The morning prelims will include the women's 100 freestyle, the men's 200 backstroke, the women's 200 breaststroke and the men's 200 IM.
Thursday's evening session will begin at 7:45 p.m. ET and will include the finals of the men's 200 breaststroke, the women's 200 butterfly and the men's 100 freestyle. The session will also include the semifinals of the women's 100 freestyle, the men's 200 backstroke, the women's 200 breaststroke and the men's 200 IM.
Thursday's evening session will be broadcast live on NBC at 8 p.m. ET.
