
Pieroni Eligible for Selection to Team USA After Lifetime-Best Swim at Olympic Trials

OMAHA, Neb. – It's been historic night after historic night this week at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials for the Indiana Hoosiers.
Indiana's Blake Pieroni is eligible for selection to Team USA after a great performance in the 100 freestyle, while Olympian Lilly King earned the No. 1 seed for the 200 breaststroke final on Friday. IU alum and 2016 Olympian Cody Miller ended his Trials on a high note, placing fifth overall in the 200 breaststroke.
"I really need to pinch myself after this evening," Indiana head swimming coach Ray Looze said. "Blake Pieroni has put himself in a position to be selected for the Olympics with his electric swim tonight. He had an outstanding race plan and executed it to perfection. We are all so very proud of this team. Lilly King's swim did the job and moves her forward for tomorrow. Overall, another special night in Omaha for the Hoosiers."
Pieroni had a career swim on Thursday night in the final of the men's 100 freestyle, placing sixth overall with a lifetime-best mark of 48.78. With his sixth-place finish, Pieroni is now eligible for selection to Team USA's 4x100 relay in the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.
The performance marks the third-straight personal-best for Pieroni, who swam a 49.39 in prelims and then touched the wall in 49.07 in Wednesday's semifinals. Entering the Trials, Pieroni was seeded No. 23 in the event.
In the final of the men's 200 breaststroke, Miller placed fifth overall with a time of 2:10.22. Miller, who qualified for Team USA and the 2016 Rio Olympics earlier in the week with a second place finish in the 100 breaststroke.
King continued her tremendous week on Thursday, earning the No. 1 seed for Friday night's 200 breaststroke final with a personal-best time of 2:24.03. King is looking to add a second event to her Rio Olympics docket, as the rising sophomore won the 100 breaststroke earlier this week to earn her place on Team USA.
Earlier in prelims, IU's Wilson Beckman had an outstanding swim. Entering the 200 backstroke seeded No. 118, Beckman touched the wall in a lifetime-best mark of 2:01.41 – over two seconds better than his previous personal best to finish 22nd overall. Teammate Bob Glover tied for 35th place with a time of 2:03.54.
The 2016 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials will continue on Friday morning at 11 a.m. ET at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha. The morning prelims will include the men's 50 freestyle, the women's 800 freestyle, the men's 100 butterfly and the women's 200 backstroke.
Friday's evening session will begin at 7:45 p.m. ET and will include the finals of the women's 200 breast, the men's 200 backstroke, the men's 200 IM and the women's 100 freestyle. The session will also include the semifinals of the men's 50 freestyle, the women's 200 backstroke and the men's 100 butterfly.
Friday's evening session will be broadcast live on NBC at 8 p.m. ET.
