
16 Hoosiers to Compete in the Olympic Trials

The US Track and Field Olympic Trials will be held in Eugene, Ore. over the next ten days. The Hoosiers will have 11 former athletes competing for a coveted spot on the USA Olympic team. Current assistant coach Cory Martin will compete in the shot put. He will throw at 2:00PM today in hopes of making the 8:40PM final later this evening. Monique Riddick will throw in the women's shot put and will be in action on July 7. The qualifying round will begin in the early afternoon followed by the finals in the evening.
Gold medal winner Molly Ludlow-Beckwith will be running in the first round of the 800m races tonight at 7:45PM. The semi-finals will be run tomorrow at 2:45PM, followed by the finals on July 4 at 8:40PM. Kind Butler will also be running his first round race this evening. He will be competing in the 400m dash that begins at 8:15PM. The semi-finals are at 4:45PM tomorrow and will be concluded with the finals on July 4 a 7:45PM.
Two athletes with Hoosier ties will run in the steeplechase. Andy Bayer, Indiana Alum, and Sarah Pease, current volunteer assistant coach, will race on the 4th in the qualifying heat and on July 8 in the finals.
The Hoosiers will be well represented in the pole vault with four former athletes likely to jump. The men's competition will begin on Saturday with the qualifying round and conclude on the 4th with the finals. Jeff Coover, Scott Houston and Drew Volz will participate. Vera Neuenswander Schmitz is still on the bubble for the women's pole vault. If she does make the final cut she will compete on July 8 in the qualifying round, then again July 10 in the finals.
The final athlete to represent IU at the Olympic Trials is Rex Parker. He will jump in the triple jump on July 7. The finals for the event will be on the 9th.
The Canadian Olympic Trials will take place between July 7-10 and will have five athletes with Hoosier ties. All five athletes will compete in the jumping events.
Derek Drouin, the reigning bronze medal winner, will lead the pack in the high jump. Current student-athlete Paul Galas and former IU athlete Emma Kimoto will also compete in the high jump. The men's qualifying session is on July 7 followed by the finals on the 9th. The women's action will take place on July 8 and conclude on the 9th.
Danielle Quinn, current Hoosier, will be in action on July 8 in the triple jump qualifications. The finals will be held on the 9th. IU Alum, Kelsie Ahbe will round out the group trying to punch a ticket to Rio. She will compete in the pole vault on July 8. The finals will be held on July 10.
