Former Bowerman Award winner Derek Drouin will compete in the high jump at the Rio Olympics this August as a member of team Canada. He qualified for his second Olympics by winning the high jump at the Canadian Championships and Rio Selection Trials this past weekend. Drouin, who took home the bronze medal in the 2012 Olympic games, was a seven time All-American while he was a student athlete at Indiana. He graduated in 2013.
Kelsie Ahbe punched her first Olympic ticket and will aslo represent the Canadian National team. She finished third in the Canadian Championships on Sunday in the pole vault. Ahbe was a 2013 graduate and a two time All-American as a Hoosier.
Olu Olamigoke will be representing Nigeria in the triple jump in his first Olympic Games. Olamigoke was a 2012 graduate and was a two time All-American in the triple jump.
Two Hoosier alums suffered heartbreak at the US Track and Field Trials with a pair of fourth place finishes, just missing the automatic qualifier that comes with a top three finish in each event. Molly Ludlow finished fourth in the 800m final by .04 seconds. Andy Bayer also finished fourth in the men's steeplechase after a late surge by two runners in the final 100m of the race.
Monique Riddick was one spot away from qualifying for the shot put final, but fell to 13th on the last throw of the preliminary round. Her best throw was 17.29m. Current assistant coach Cory Martin finished 14th in the shot put, his best throw was 19.84m.
Sarah Pease just missed the final cut of the women's steeplechase with a 15th place finish in a time of 9:46.83. Kind Butler finished 19th in the men's 400m dash with a time of 46.10. Rex Parker finished 24th in the triple jump with a mark of 14.47m.
Jeff Coover qualified for the finals in the pole vault with a mark of 5.50m in the preliminaries but did not clear the bar in the finals to finish 10th overall. Scott Houston also made the finals after clearing 5.50m but scratched out. Drew Volz finished 17th in the pole vault with a clearance of 5.40m. Vera Schmitz finished 18th in the women's pole vault with a mark of 4.25m.
In the Canadian Championships Emma Kimoto finished sixth in the women's high jump with a mark of 1.75m. Current Hoosier Paul Galas also took sixth in the men's high jump. His best jump was 2.03m.
