OMAHA, Neb. – Indiana University head swimming coach Ray Looze was named to Team USA's coaching staff for the upcoming Rio Summer Olympics, USA Swimming National Team director Frank Busch announced on Sunday. Looze will serve as an assistant coach for the women's team.
"It is a dream come true to be on a U.S. Olympic coaching staff," Looze remarked. "To be able to represent the United States of America is a humbling honor that I will never forget. It's important to thank our entire Indiana coaching staff and all our swimmers for making these Olympic opportunities possible. This past week has been a blessing for every Hoosier. Now it's time to get ready to swim even faster in Rio, where we will be challenged by the world's best. I could not be more excited and proud to be going to Rio with IU diving coach Drew Johansen and our 11 IU swimmers and divers."
At last week's U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials, three IU swimmers qualified for Team USA, led by Lilly King who won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. IU alum Cody Miller qualified for the 100 breast, while rising junior Blake Pieroni qualified for the 4x100 relay.
It's been a banner year for Looze and Indiana, as Looze became the first swimming coach in Big Ten league history to be named both the men's and women's conference coach of the year during the same season. Looze has won Big Ten Swimming Coach of the Year honors a total of six times – four for the men and two for the women.
Under Looze's guidance, the Hoosier men placed ninth at the 2016 NCAA Championships with a total of 180.5 points and finished as the top Big Ten team at the NCAA's for the first time since 1978. On the women's side, Looze led the IU women to their best finish ever at the NCAA Championships, placing seventh with a program-best 228 points.
Looze has prior coaching experience with Team USA, serving as the head women's coach at the 2015 World University Games and at the 2014 FINA SC World Championships. Looze also served as an assistant men's coach at the 2011 Duel in the Pool and at the 2009 World University Games.
Overall, the Indiana men's and women's swimming and diving teams will be sending 11 current or former student-athletes to Rio. The 2016 Summer Olympics begin on Aug. 3.
