Indiana’s Hixon, Goss Earn Medals at Rio Summer Olympics on Wednesday

RIO DE JANEIRO – Indiana University's Michael Hixon and Kennedy Goss earned medals on another stellar day for the Hoosier swimming and diving program on Wednesday at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.
Hixon won a silver medal in the men's 3m synchronized springboard in dramatic fashion on Wednesday afternoon with partner Sam Dorman for Team USA, which is led by Indiana head diving coach Drew Johansen. Goss earned her bronze medal by swimming in the prelims of the women's 4x200 freestyle relay for Team Canada.
With Hixon and Goss' medals on Monday night, the IU swimming and diving program has now won 67 medals in Olympic history, including 37 gold, 10 silver and 20 bronze. In total, Indiana University has won 101 total medals across all events.
Hixon and Goss' medals are the fourth and fifth medals for the Hoosiers already in Rio. Along with Lilly King's gold in the 100 breaststroke, IU alum Cody Miller won bronze in the men's 100 breaststroke and IU junior Blake Pieroni earned a gold medal as a member of Team USA's 4x100 freestyle relay team on Sunday.
Hixon's medal in in the 3m synchro is the eighth diving medal in IU history and the first since Mark Lenzi won bronze in the 3m springboard in 1996.
"Mike and Sam were amazing today," coach Johansen said. "There was nothing that was going to stop them from having a great performance on the world's biggest stage. It was so much fun to keep the magic alive for the Hoosiers."
After the first two rounds of the final, Hixon and Dorman sat in seventh place with a score of 100.80. The duo hit their stride in the third round, posting a score of 85.68 to vault in to third place halfway through the competition.
Hixon and Dorman then nailed their fourth-round dive, scoring an 87.15 to move in to second place with just two rounds left. After scoring a 78.54 in the fifth round, the Hoosiers sat behind Great Britain and China heading in to the sixth and final round.
With the pressure of a final dive to win an Olympic medal on their shoulders, Hixon and Dorman had to deal with a nearly six-minute delay before their final dive. The Mexican team, who dove right before the Americans, petitioned the judges for a redo of their last dive after a light appeared to go on during their attempt.
Finally, Hixon and Dorman were allowed to make their final dive. The wait was worth it, as Hixon and Dorman posted the highest-scoring dive of competition, scoring a 98.04 on their 3.8 difficulty dive to score a total of 450.21.
The team from Great Britain was able to score a final round 91.20 to take the lead from Hixon and Dorman with a score of 454.32. The only team left that could finish above the Americans were the Chinese, but the duo was unable to put together a great final dive, clinching the silver medal for Hixon and Dorman.
In the women's 4x200 freestyle relay, Goss earned a bronze medal after swimming in the prelims for Team Canada on Wednesday afternoon. In the final, the Canadian relay team touched third with a time of 7:45.39.
In the morning prelims, Goss helped Canada earn the No. 6 seed for Olympic final, swimming the anchor leg of the relay in a time of 1:59.49.
In the women's 200 breaststroke, King placed 12th overall, touching the wall in a time of 2:24.59 in the semifinals on Wednesday night. King, who entered Rio seeded No. 16 in the event, swam a 2:25.89 in the prelims of the event.
King's Rio Olympics will continue on Friday, when the Olympic gold medalist will swim for Team USA in the 4x100 medley relay.
