William Inge
Linebackers/Special Teams Coordinator - Cover Units
On Camp Progression...
Inge: The big focus for us is always going to be playing with great effort, managing ourselves at the point of attack and doing a great job of being able to get takeaways in pass coverage. We have been doing great in this first week and we are continuing to strive in trying to keep our edge as we move forward. We are so lucky we got this heat today.
On Position Battles...
Inge: The biggest thing with our Mike linebacker is we are looking for guys that can takeover and have ownership of the defense. They know they have got to get the defense called, get the line adjusted and be the quarterback on the field. We have been very impressed with Marcus Oliver, Dameon Willis, Chris Covington and TJ Simmons. Those guys have been able to step forward and emerge at the point of attack and make the plays. It will be a battle to see who will be the guy at that position.
On Dawson Fletcher...
Inge: In his career, as a player coming from safety, he has been able to do great making the transition into backer. A lot of the times the question is going to be can he be physical enough to stick his head in there. We are seeing signs of him being able to do that and we are pleased at the way he has progressed so far.
On Playing with an Edge...
Inge: That is what it is all about. The number one thing that we have got to do is play with an edge. You have to play with an edge, you have to be hungry, you have to want it, you have to want to be the guy at the point of attack and you have to have laser-like focus. Those are the things we have been emphasizing at every position on defense.
Dawson Fletcher
Linebacker
On Camp Progress...
Fletcher: I am excited, really excited for the season. There are certain things we have to work on like at any fall camp, but I really love the defense. I love the energy Coach Allen is bringing. They are coaching us hard, but we need to be coached hard. We need to continue to mature as a defense and get ready to play.
On Playing with an Edge...
Fletcher: I am really embracing it. It is something different. It is something I really like. I like that Coach Allen has a bunch of energy. The team is really picking it up, and that is something we need, especially in the Big Ten. I am really excited about the results we are going to have this year.
On His Focus...
Fletcher: Personally, I need to keep working on my run fits, my footwork and the simple fundamentals. Coming from safety to linebacker is a little different feel with playing in the box. I like it, but I have to continue to work on it.
On the Offense...
Fletcher: They are really explosive. They can still run the ball. Coach McCullough has a stable back there. You cannot win in the Big Ten without running the ball, so that is definitely a big deal. I am excited about that.
