RIO DE JANEIRO – Indiana University ended swimming at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics on a high note, as Indiana sophomore Lilly King and IU alum Cody Miller each won a gold medal on Saturday night.
King won her second gold medal of the Olympics, swimming the breaststroke leg for Team USA's winning women's 4x100 medley relay team. Miller also swam the breaststroke leg for Team USA, helping the men's 4x100 medley relay team to a gold medal. Miller previously won a bronze medal in the 100 breast in Rio.
With King and Miller's second medals each on Saturday night, the IU swimming and diving program has now won 69 medals in Olympic history, including 39 gold, 10 silver and 20 bronze. In total, Indiana University has won 103 total medals across all events.
With the two medals on Saturday, night, Indiana swimming and diving has now won a total of seven medals at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics. The seven total medals so far in Rio are the most for the IU swimming and diving program since the team won 16 medals in 1972.
Along with the two medals for both King and Miller, junior Blake Pieroni earned a gold medal as a member of Team USA's 4x100 freestyle relay team, junior Kennedy Goss earned a bronze medal as a member of Team Canada's 4x200 freestyle relay team and junior diver Michael Hixon won silver in the men's 3m synchronized springboard.
Team USA's 4x100 medley relay team was dominant in winning gold on Saturday night, winning with a time of 3:53.13 – nearly two second ahead of Australia. King had a great breaststroke leg for the Americans, splitting 1:05.70.
With Team USA's victory in the 4x200 free relay, King becomes the first IU athlete in any sport – male or female – to win two gold medals in the same Olympic Games since Jim Montgomery won three swimming gold medals in 1976. King is the seventh IU swimmer – male or female – to win multiple gold medals in one Olympic Games.
In the men's 4x100 medley relay, Miller had a terrific breaststroke split for Team USA, posting a time of 59.03. The Americans won gold with a total time of 3:29.24, beating Great Britain who won silver.
"Cody Miller has been so transformative to our program over the last six years," Looze remarked. "I'm really speechless to describe what he means to the Indiana swimming team. For him to leave the Olympic Games with one gold and one bronze medal is a true testament to total commitment. Cody embodies strength, determination, competitiveness and is now an Olympic champion."
