IU’s Hixon Qualifies for 3M Springboard Semifinals at Rio Summer Olympics

RIO DE JANEIRO – Indiana University redshirt junior diver Michael Hixon qualified for Tuesday morning's semifinals in the 3m springboard at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.
Hixon qualified 10th overall in the prelims on Monday with a score of 421.60. The top-18 divers made it through to the semifinals and the top-12 divers in Tuesday's semis will qualify for the final later Tuesday night.
"Mike did a great job today," IU head diving coach and Team USA head diving coach Drew Johansen remarked. "He faced severe wind, cold and setting sun during his contest. He showed the judges he will be a contender tomorrow even with the few missed dives he had. We are looking forward to another exciting day at the pool on Tuesday."
Hixon, who won a silver medal in the 3m synchronized dive last week in Rio, overcame the elements to post score of 75 points or better in three of his six dives on Monday afternoon. Hixon had two dives score over 80 points, including a third-round dive of 85.75.
Hixon will look to earn a berth to the Olympic final of the 3m springboard on Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m. ET. Scores from the prelims on Monday do not carry over in to the semifinals.
