RIO DE JANEIRO – Former NCAA Champion Derek Drouin was once again crowned high jump champion. He won Gold in the men's high jump with a mark of 2.38m. Drouin becomes the first track and field individual gold medalist with Hoosier ties since Greg Bell's Gold medal in the 1956 long jump. His Gold is the eighth in Indiana history and is the 15th medal won by the Hoosier track and field team.
On his first attempt Drouin cleared 2.20m with relative ease. He, once again, cleared on his first attempt at 2.25m. On the third height of the evening Drouin kept it rolling by clearing 2.29m, the same height he cleared to earn Bronze in the 2012 London Olympics, on his first jump. He stayed in rhythm to clear 2.33m on his first attempt as well. Drouin then cleared 2.36m, vaulting him into first place. He was the only athlete to clear 2.38m.
Drouin took home Bronze in the 2012 Olympic Games in London in the same event. He joins David Neville, Milt Campbell and Roy Cochran as the only two-time Olympic medalists.
On Sunday evening, Drouin cruised through the qualifying round by clearing all four heights he attempted. The bar started at 2.17m and was cleared easily on the first attempt. The next height, also cleared on his first attempt, was 2.22m. The competition started to dwindle down after the bar was raised to 2.26m, however, Drouin again cleared it on his first try. The final height of the night was 2.29m, which he cleared on his first jump.
Monday morning brought on the men's triple jump competition. Former Hoosier All-American Olu Olamigoke made his Olympic debut by finishing 32nd in the event for Nigeria. Olamigoke's first jump carried him 16.10m. Unfortunately, he was unable to improve upon his mark in his remaining two jumps.
