Head Coach Kevin Wilson Quotes
Takeaways from Scrimmage...
Wilson: We had a good camp and really good today. We got them in some good situations between goal line, kicking, kill the clock four-minute and two-minute drill. We could have tackled better. We let a few tackles get out today. Offense made a few plays today. Defense has been great. We have had a great week. We need these next four or five days, with classes getting started, to add a lot of polish heading into game week. We came out of camp healthy and with a team that is headed in the right direction. We just need to keep working. We start with a road test, a tough test and a strong challenge in Florida International. We have to keep working, but I like the work. Really good day today, with the weather outside, really good day today.
On Successful Fall Camp...
Wilson: For me, when you pop the pads as a football team you have to learn to re-establish how to tackle and block and the physical presence and body language of a good team. You can lift, run and train all you want, but you need to re-establish that. Even though you have player practices, they are not padded. You have to learn how to hit, but you also have to be smart. We have done a lot of hitting. We actually did a great job yesterday at our practice. We did a lot of hitting knowing that today the line of scrimmage would be a little modified. I kind of cheated yesterday and had a great go yesterday. The last two days have been awesome. I think we are building the toughness we need and the depth we need. We have a long way to go, but I like the way this team is moving.
Young Player Improvements...
Wilson: We are deeper, and we are going to need it. Right now we have a couple guys, nothing major, the only injury of note today has been J-Shaun Harris. Robert McCray is going to miss the first half of the season coming off of his injury. Same with Camion Patrick. Other than that, we have guys that we have to be smart with in practice and contact. That being said, these freshmen have to play. Today, Ricky Jones and Mitchell Paige did not get a bunch of work. We need Isaac James, Ricky Brookins, Nick Westbrook and Luke Timian to mature. A lot of work today was with those young guys. It was nice to see Cole Gest and Clyde Newton coming into running back and doing well. It was good to see those guys, because I believe to be a good football team in the Big Ten, and to be a good team early, you need a lot of players.
