MANAUS, Brazil – Indiana Women's Soccer alumna Orianica Velasquez wrapped up competition in the 2016 Olympic Games on Tuesday against the United States, as Colombia played to a 2-2 draw with the reigning Olympic Gold Medalists.
Velasquez, a 2013 Indiana graduate was participating in her second Olympics after also appearing in the 2012 Games.
Aug. 3 - Colombia 0, France 4
Velasquez was tabbed as a starter and played every minute of the contest as a defender. Despite Colombia surrendering three first half goals, the team settled in and did not allow France to add onto its lead until a late score from Amel Majri in the 82nd minute.
Aug. 6 - Colombia 0, New Zealand 1
Once again playing every minute, Velasquez made her second start of the Games as a defender. The game was tightly contested until the 31st minute when New Zealand got on the board off the foot of Amber Hearn. Velasquez fired up a shot on target in the 43rd minute, but goalkeeper Erin Nayler was there to make the save. Colombia continued to look for the equalizer and received a few good looks late, including a free kick in the 88th minute following a New Zealand red card. However, Nayler was once again ready for it as she picked up an impressive stop to preserve the victory.
Aug. 9 - Colombia 2, United States 2
Making her third start as a defender, Velasquez helped Colombia battle to a 2-2 draw with the United States and pick up the team's first point. Both Colombian goals came off the foot of María Catalina Usme, who put Colombia up 1-0 in the 26th minute. The score was the first surrendered by the United States during the Games. American Crystal Dunn tied up the contest just before half in the 41st minute. Mallory Pugh gave the United States a 2-1 advantage in the 59th minute before a 90th minute equalizer from Usme. The draw allowed the United States to win Group G and advance to the next stage.
