RIO DE JANEIRO – Indiana University alum Cody Miller used a lifetime-best swim in the semifinals to qualify for Sunday night's final in the 100 breaststroke at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics on Saturday.
Miller wasn't the only Hoosier with a great performance on the first day of swimming in Rio, as incoming transfer Marwan Elkamash placed 16th overall in the men's 400 freestyle.
"Great first day for the Indiana Hoosiers here in Rio," Indiana head coach and Team USA assistant coach Ray Looze remarked. "Marwan set a new Egyptian record and personal best in the 400 freestyle and Cody set a new personal-best and earned the No. 2 seed going into the final of the 100 breast. Very proud of both these young men to step up on such a lofty stage and preform at a high level. We have much more work to do here in Rio, but are pointed in the right direction."
Miller, a 2015 graduate, had a career swim in the semifinals on Saturday night, touching the wall in a personal-best time of 59.05 that is just 0.11 seconds off the American record. Miller finished second in his semifinal, behind No. 1-seeded Adam Peaty of Great Britain.
The mark was 0.12 seconds faster than his morning prelim time and 0.04 faster than his previous best he set at the Olympic Trials.
In the prelims, Miller placed third in Heat 4 with a time of 59.17 to qualify fifth overall for the evening semifinals.
In the men's 400 freestyle, Elkamash had a great swim, winning Heat 4 with a lifetime-best and Indiana school record time of 3:47.43 to place 16th overall. Elkamash also set a national Egyptian record with his terrific time.
Swimming for Team Egypt, Elkamash dropped 0.72 seconds off his seed time and eclipsed the previous school record of 3:50.07 set by Sergiy Fesenko in 2005 by nearly three seconds.
