RIO DE JANEIRO – Indiana University alum Cody Miller won the bronze medal in the 100 breaststroke to highlight a historic day for the Indiana University swimming and diving program at the Rio Summer Olympics on Sunday.
Along with Miller's bronze in the 100 breast, Indiana junior Blake Pieroni won a gold medal in the 4x100 freestyle relay for Team USA. IU sophomore Lilly King qualified first overall for Monday night's final in the 100 breast, while Marwan Elkamash and Anze Tavcar had strong showings for the Hoosiers in the 200 freestyle.
With the two medals on Sunday night, the IU swimming and diving program has now won 63 medals in Olympic history, including 36 gold and 18 bronze. In total, Indiana University has won 98 total medals across all events.
"I am so humbly proud of Cody, Blake and Lilly for giving Indiana University such a special night," IU head swimming coach and Team USA assistant coach Ray Looze remarked. "It is something I will never forget. Words cannot describe the gratitude we have for all three. They trusted us completely. We work hard at IU and in a way that work still works."
Miller, a 2015 IU graduate whose training is based with the Indiana coaching staff, had a fantastic swim in the Olympic final of the 100 breast, touching the wall in an American record time of 58.87. Miller swam faster each stage of the 100 breast in Rio, swimming a 59.17 in prelims and a 59.05 in the semifinals yesterday.
