Postgame Quotes
Indiana Head Coach Amanda Janney
Opening Statement:
"We were just trying to figure out our opponents, because they're a talented team and they did a great job to get a lot of attack and a lot of corners against us. We were trying to figure out how to best use our system to slow them down. We got on the players at halftime, and they picked up the intensity. For them to respond after not playing to our potential in the first half was a great sign for us."
What are your thoughts on Kate Barber, who has nine goals so far this season?
"She's super talented and such a competitor. She has that winning spirit to get things done, even when she's tired or we're down one goal in a tough situation. That senior leadership is really going to drive us far this season."
You've tried a lot of different lineups with new players in the mix. Do you think you've found the right combination?
"Not yet. We're trying to switch it up, get different people in different positions, but we gave up two quick goals. So we learned a good lesson, that we need those sparks off the bench to continue the momentum. This is a great experience for our younger players. A lot of things happened in this game, and we're taking those good lessons and moving forward into conference play."
Mollie Getzfread gets her first career goal today as a fifth-year senior. It's no secret what she brings in central midfield and on corners, but how does this goal validate her performance?
"She's one of those players who works her tail off and does everything in her power to work hard and give 100 percent to the team. She's one of those players who doesn't always get recognized in the scorebook, so for her to get a goal today in her senior year is huge for us. She's been working so hard off the field and she's a leader by example. We're thrilled for her to finally get a goal and receive that recognition."
Taylor Pearson has four goals in the last two games, and her impact on the forward line has been a steady climb since the spring. What have you seen from her and her successes?
"Skill-wise, Taylor is one of the most talented players on our team, and to see that turn into goals is great because she works so hard in practice in the midfield and between the 25-yard lines. She does so much to make us successful, so to see that inside our scoring circle is huge. She reads the game so well, she's a really smart hockey player, so it's great that she's able to get on the boards for us."
You're on a three-game winning streak heading into the Big Ten opener next weekend. How does that help build into that game at Maryland?
"It's right where we need to be, that we have confidence going into conference play. To get a good variety of field goals from different players is something we really needed. Last game, it was our corners; today, it was more field goals and counterattacks. I'm really pleased with the variety of attack we have on our team."
Junior Forward Taylor Pearson
The team tied just before halftime, and you gave them the lead early in the second half. What was the talk at halftime that lit a fire for you out of halftime?
"A lot of the play at the start of the game was in our half, so we knew we had to get the ball into their zone. We really focused on getting field goals rather than corner attacks, so we came out strong, we knew we had to execute, and our defense was sending great balls up to the forwards."
What was key to your goals? What did coach say at halftime to spark the second half?
"We knew as a team that we needed to pick it up. We knew that we were in this game, we just needed to keep possession, so we worked hard as a team. It started with the backfield; they were really strong and got it into the midfield. They were looking for the forwards cutting off of the ball and they saw the open lanes. We got it forward into the back of the net."
What are your thoughts on Kate Barber's nine goals this season?
"She has had an incredible season so far. She's so strong, so vocal in the midfield, and having that senior experience has made her unbelievable this season with her ability to find the back of the net."
What does it mean for Mollie's contribution to the team's success find validation in a goal today?
"We're all so excited for her as a team. She's such a hustler; she gives 110 percent effort in every game. We're so happy to see her put one in the back of the net, and we're looking to continue that success throughout the year."
What does a win like this do to hone your focus for Maryland next weekend?
"This was a huge weekend for us, coming out with two wins. We're looking to move that momentum into next week to start Big Ten play. We want to focus on the little things and get the kinks out now so when we hit Maryland next weekend, we'll be ready to go."
Senior Midfielder Mollie Getzfread
How does it feel to get your first goal as a fifth-year senior, given your contributions in the midfield and on penalty corners?
"It feels good, but obviously I wouldn't be able to do it without my teammates. I was trying to feed one of them the ball, but it happened to go in, which was exciting. It feels good."
You gave up an early goal but tied the game before halftime. What was the mentality going into the second half that led to the quick go-ahead goal?
"We were all just hungry to score. We knew we were the better team, but in the first half they were down on our end earning corner after corner, so it was inevitable that a ball would go in. Our corner defense played so well to keep as many out as we could. We were all-in during the second half and played together."
How does this three-game win streak help you prepare for Maryland?
"We're really excited. This was a perfect weekend to transition into Maryland. We're coming off of this weekend with so much energy, and we're looking to take that into next weekend."
What impact does Kate Barber have on your attack?
"She is essential to our attack. Without her, we wouldn't be doing as well as we are. She comes out with a fire and energy, and her corner hits are always so consistent. She's one of the most consistent players we have."
What was the key to get things going in the second half?
"We had that fire and the fight in us in the locker room. Our coach knew we could do better, and we came together to improve on our play."
