Indiana at Florida International
September 1, 2016
• Indiana has won 13 of its last 14 season openers and eight of its last nine non-conference games, including seven consecutive.
• Head coach Kevin Wilson is 5-1 in season openers with five straight victories.
• IU leads the all-time series with Florida International, 2-0.
• Tonight was the Hoosiers first game in the state of Florida since facing Miami on Oct. 22, 1966.
• Indiana's defense limited Florida International to 331 total, 63 rushing and 268 passing yards. The Hoosiers forced seven three-and-outs.
• IU held a 486-331 advantage in total yards and a 246-63 edge in rushing yards.
• Cornerback Rashard Fant was the first Hoosier to reach the end zone in 2016. He picked off his second career pass and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. Fant now has an INT in two straight games dating back to the 2015 New Era Pinstripe Bowl.
• Fant's pick six was the first for IU since junior safety Tony Fields returned an interception 20 yards at Wake Forest on Sept. 26, 2015.
• Junior linebacker Tegray Scales recorded his sixth career interception and the first pick-6 of his career, a 16-yarder in the fourth quarter.
• It is believed to be the first time in school history that the Hoosiers have recorded two pick-sixes in a single game.
• Redshirt junior cornerback Ben Bach recorded his first career interception in the fourth quarter.
• Indiana has netted back-to-back three-interception games dating back to last season's New Era Pinstripe Bowl.
• The Hoosiers first points of the season came on a safety, the team's first safety since Sept. 3, 2009, against Eastern Kentucky. FIU was flagged for holding in the end zone. The 2009 safety also accounted for IU's first points that season.
• Redshirt sophomore defensive end Nile Sykes collected the team's first sack of the season and the first of his career in the fourth quarter.
• Sophomore safety Jonathan Crawford led all defenders with seven tackles, five solo.
• Redshirt junior linebacker Marcus Oliver and true freshman husky each added five stops and one pass breakup.
• IU rushed for 246 yards, breaking 200 yards for the 19th time in its last 26 games.
• Junior Devine Redding led the Hoosiers with 135 yards on 22 carries (6.1 average). He recorded his fourth career 100-yard game, all in succession. Redding gives Indiana at least one 100-yard rusher for the 23rd time in its last 26 games.
• In his first career start for IU, redshirt junior quarterback Richard Lagow finished 18-of-27 for 240 yards with the game-winning 21-yard touchdown to redshirt junior tight end Danny Friend and a 6-yard rushing score. He finished with a 153.6 passer rating.
• Friend's TD was the first of his career and his fourth career reception.
• Sophomore Nick Westbrook led all Hoosiers with six catches for 70 yards, both career-highs.
• Sophomore running back Mike Majette delivered a solid all-around effort with 47 rushing yards on 10 rushes and two receptions for a career-high 54 yards.
• Redshirt freshman Devonte Williams set career-highs with eight carries for 31 yards.
• Five Indiana defenders made their first career starts: defensive linemen Greg Gooch (junior), Patrick Dougherty (redshirt junior) and Jacob Robinson (sophomore), safety Tony Fields (junior) and husky Marcelino Ball (true freshman).
• Four Indiana offensive players made their first career starts: quarterback Richard Lagow (redshirt junior), tight end Danny Friend (redshirt junior), wide receiver Nick Westbrook (sophomore) and offensive lineman Coy Cronk (true freshman).
