Postgame Quotes
Indiana Head Coach Amanda Janney:
What does the team take away after a loss like this?
"It was such a hard-fought game, and we did a good job to put our team in a position to be successful, because our defense played phenomenally. For them to shut down #9 (Natalie Cafone) for as long as we did, we're playing against a really talented forward. We want to make sure we're taking all the good things from today and moving forward, because I think we're playing really good hockey right now. We just need to keep executing our style of play in October."
You've has a lot of high-scoring games recently, but to day was a grind-it-out defensive battle. What's your approach in a game like that?
"Those are good moments for us. We were giving up too many shots in the first half, but we still shut them out in those 35 minutes. It's a good sign for our defense, because we've been training a lot of our defensive movement and I think our team has improved from previous games. We're one of those teams that sometimes needs only one shot to find a way to score, so we were trying to find those breakaway moments."
On Nora Aucker and Malia Fujisawa, both guarding Iowa's top scorer…
"We put the task to Nora to shut down their best player, and I think Nora did a great job to start the first half for us and limit her touches in the first half. At the end of the first half, we put Malia there and she did a great job stepping up and making intercepts like we know she can do."
On Mollie Getzfread's performance…
"Mollie was a standout for us in the midfield today. In the middle of play with tons of space in the midfield, she was coming up with clean, solid tackles. She's worked hard to create those situations for herself."
On Kelsey Giese's first career goal…
"I'm really happy for Kelsey because two games ago she told me, 'Coach, I'm going to score today.' She has that kind of passion where she's a competitor, she wants to win, and she's fearless. When she got up and took that backswing, we knew she was going to hit it as hard as she could, and she blasted it into the back of the net."
On Sunday's game at Miami…
"There's definitely still a bad taste in our mouth from last year, we really thought that was a winnable game for us. I thought we got outplayed; Miami played really well last year. Knowing how good we're playing right now and the pace we're playing, we expect to come out strong and aim for a score in the first half."
Freshman Kelsey Giese:
Describe that moment when you scored the first goal of your collegiate career…
"I saw it come off of their defender, and it was right in front of me. I was thinking, 'I cannot miss this.' I saw the goalie move, so I wanted to get the ball in the air and I did. I was overcome with joy when I saw it went in."
How does it feel to break through in the middle of this season?
"It feels awesome. I wish it could've happened a little earlier in the season. It gave me a lot of confidence knowing that I can play in the backfield and on the attack."
What was the conversation in the postgame huddle?
"We were reflecting on this game, seeing what we could learn from this game that we could bring into Sunday's game. We want to learn from this game, rather than dwelling on the loss."
On playing defense and forward in high school; now, in the midfield for Indiana…
"I've always kind of played everywhere. For my club team, I played center back; for my high school, I played center forward and midfield. I like it, because I'd rather be flexible than stuck in one position. Playing defense helps me observe attackers, especially the moves they use to get past me, and I turn around and use those moves on offense."
Senior Mollie Getzfread
This game featured a lot of play in the midfield. How do you think you were able to hold that line through the first 70 minutes?
"The defense played really well today. We had a lot of nice interceptions and tackles in the backfield, but we struggled to keep it in our attacking third in the first half. Thankfully, we got more opportunities in the second half."
On the Hoosiers' energy in the second half…
"We really started playing together. We are a second half team, which is something we need to work on. But we came out with a lot of fight in the second half to get attacking corners."
On Kelsey Giese's first career goal…
"Kelsey has worked so hard in the left midfield and with our links, so her getting the goal was so special for the whole team."
On facing Miami…
"Miami is going to be a tough team. They came out hard on us last year, and they always have that fight in them. If we can keep it together and play the same level on the defensive end, and focus on our attack, we'll be great."
