Postgame Quotes
Head Coach Amanda Janney
How do you feel the team finished today's game, after battling back from an early goal to a strong second half?
"We finished strong. It was exciting to have the momentum on our end after scoring that goal. We tried some new strategies, and the team responded well to tough competition. We're pleased with the way we were able to make some major improvements from the first two games. For them to fight back and get that goal, and have that momentum as the game ended, made us wish we had more time on the clock. We really thought we were about to score again."
What were you able to get done on defense after that first goal that shut down one of the ACC and NCAA contenders?
"Our defense did a great job of stepping up and playing aggressive, looking for intercepts and putting their forward group under pressure. Our opponents had some great shots, but our defense played with urgency and made some huge stops to keep them off the board in the middle of the game."
Tomorrow's game versus UC Davis…
"We learned a lot from today's game. It's so nice to see improvement from each game that we've played. We had a pretty big jump from our play last weekend in the way we're passing the ball and defending as a team. We want to make sure the things that worked well for us today carry into tomorrow's game, focusing on our successes while creating more shot attempts and attack penalty corners."
Junior Defender Elle Hempt
What success did your defensive unit find after conceding the first goal?
"After the first goal, we learned as a defensive unit what the team was doing. We learned that we needed to step up on the sides for interceptions. We played smart, utilized our links and outside midfielders to shut down their attack."
What is your assessment after playing one of the top teams in the nation?
"The coaches had a great game plan for us. We knew going into it who the key players were, and we had a lot of knowledge on their corners, their plan for outlet passes, and their fast break play. We had the ability to stick with them and come back into the game. It's a testament to how hard the team worked in the offseason that we can hang with a top-10 team, and that will only progress as the season progresses."
Facing UC Davis tomorrow…
"Our focus is playing smart. We finished the game on a high note. We were very strong in the last 10 minutes with our play on the ball, getting good passes, playing up the field and getting shooting opportunities. We'll focus on playing smart and taking that fire into the game tomorrow."
