BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Former Hoosiers linebacker Matt Mayberry has tackled a new challenge – authoring his first book, WINNING PLAYS: Tackling Adversity and Achieving Success in Business and in Life. The book, which will be released on September 6, covers his experiences in tackling adversity through his biggest failures that he was eventually able to turn into his most impressive successes.
Mayberry is now the CEO of Matt Mayberry Enterprises, a training and consulting company. He is a highly acclaimed keynote speaker and performance strategist who also serves as a columnist for Entrepreneur Magazine and Fortune Magazine. His specialization is maximizing individual performance.
None of this would have been possible without the influences and mentors he met at Indiana University. More specifically, late head football coach Terry Hoeppner. Coach Hep was responsible for recruiting him out of Darien, Ill., and was instrumental in his growth.
Mayberry also cited the remarkable job that Mattie White, IU's associate athletic director for academic services and the Excellence Academy, and the entire academic team did in helping steer him in the right direction.
"Indiana served as a tremendous platform to develop a young man into a successful entrepreneur," Mayberry said. "I would not be in the position that I am without the support of the University."
Mayberry has stayed heavily involved with the Hoosiers athletic program since graduating in 2010. Last year, he came back to speak to the student-athletes. Mayberry's job takes him all over the world, but each Saturday he makes sure he is available to watch his alma mater on the gridiron.
He finished his career with 251 tackles (139 solo stops), 22.5 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks, three interceptions and three fumble recoveries. Mayberry was an honorable mention All-Big Ten as a senior and was recognized with the Howard Brown Award, which exemplifies leaderships, courage and work ethic. He went on to become an undrafted free agent with the Chicago Bears in 2010.
