BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 1-ranked Indiana University men's soccer team defeated rival and No. 19-ranked Kentucky, 2-0, on Wednesday night at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind.
With the victory, the Hoosiers improve to 11-0-2 on the season overall, while the Wildcats fall to 7-3-2 on the year. Indiana is unbeaten in the first 13 matches of the season for the first time since 1997 and for the sixth time in program history.
The seven-straight shutouts for the Hoosiers is a single-season record and matches the all-time record set by the 1975 and 1976 teams that combined for seven-in-a-row. The 11 shutouts on the year are the most in the NCAA and are the most to start a season since 1979.
Redshirt junior Timmy Mehl scored the match-winner in the 13th minute, while senior Rashad Hyacenth netted a goal in the 73rd minute for the Hoosiers. Redshirt junior Trevor Swartz, redshirt junior Francesco Moore and redshirt freshman Spencer Glass all had assists in the victory.
In goal, freshman keeper Trey Muse had a great match for the Hoosiers. The Louisville, Ky. native made a career-high six saves in recording his NCAA-leading 11th shutout of the season.
The Hoosiers jumped ahead of the Wildcats in the 13th minute, scoring off a set piece. After a foul on Kentucky, IU had a free kick on the right sideline. Swartz sent a great cross in to the center of the box, finding the foot of Mehl, who smashed home the goal from six-yards out to the top-right corner. Mehl's third goal of the season gave the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead.
After the goal, Kentucky's offense came alive, but Muse and the IU defense held strong. The Wildcats nearly tied the match with just five seconds left, but Muse made a diving save on a laser from UK's Mikkel Pedersen to give Indiana a 1-0 lead at the break.
In the first 45 minutes, the Hoosiers out-shot the Wildcats, 6-5, with each team getting four shots on-goal. Corner kicks were 3-2 for IU.
In the second half, the Wildcats came out aggressive looking for an equalizer, but it was Indiana that found the next goal.
Off a corner kick in the 73rd minute, Glass sent a ball to the near side of the 18-yard box. Moore flicked on to the near post, where Hyacenth was able to poke it past the Kentucky goalie, pushing the IU lead to 2-0 on his third goal of the season.
The Wildcats continued to throw men forward, looking to get on the scoreboard, but Muse and the Hoosier defense held strong. Indiana has not allowed a goal in the last 689:37 minutes of play.
For the match, Indiana was out-shot for the first time on the season, 11-10, by Kentucky. UK had six shots on-goal to five for IU, while corner kicks were even at 7-7.
The No. 1-ranked Indiana Hoosiers will host Big Ten rival and No. 19-ranked Ohio State on Sunday, Oct. 15 at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET.
The match will be part of a doubleheader with the Indiana women's soccer team, who hosts Nebraska at 12:00 p.m. ET. Any fan who is in Armstrong Stadium prior to the second half of the women's game will get in the men's game for free.
