BLOOMINGTON, Indiana - The I Association awarded Indiana University President Michael McRobbie and First Lady Laurie Burns McRobbie with one of its highest honors this weekend, selecting both as Honorary I Award recipients for their significant contributions to Indiana University Athletics.
Both were presented with the award at the 50-year I Men Awards Recognition Dinner Friday night by I Association President Mark Deal. They'll be recognized again during the first quarter of Saturday's Homecoming game against Michigan at Memorial Stadium.
I Awards are given to student-athletes who earn a varsity letter in intercollegiate sports at Indiana University. Over the course of the organization's 104-year history, however, 70 other individuals have been presented with Honorary I Awards thanks to their involvement and support of IU Athletics.
The McRobbies are the latest additions to that exclusive list. In addition to being regular attendees and supporters at Hoosier sporting events, President McRobbie has been a part of an era at Indiana University that has witnessed 11 new athletic facilities or major renovations.
"I am deeply grateful to be inducted as an honorary member of the I-Association and to join former IU presidents Herman Wells, Elvis Stahr and John Ryan as honorary members of this prestigious group, which has consistently stood for the values and principles that are at the heart of IU Athletics," McRobbie said. "I am also extremely pleased to be inducted as an honorary member of the I-Association on the same evening that my wife, Laurie, is inducted. Laurie and I have attended many IU athletic events together, and we have both been enormously impressed by the passion and commitment we have witnessed among IU's student-athletes, past and present, in all 24 sports."
