BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 1-ranked Indiana University men's soccer team defeated the No. 17-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind.
With the win, Indiana extends the team's win-streak and school-record consecutive shutout mark to eight games, improving IU to 12-0-2 on the season overall and to 4-0-2 in Big Ten conference play. IU's eight-match win streak is the longest for the team since 2003, when the Hoosiers won 10-consecutive. Ohio State falls to 7-5-1 on the year and to 3-3 in league action.
Freshman Mason Toye scored both goals for the Hoosiers, pushing his team-leading total to eight on the season. Freshman Griffin Dorsey, redshirt junior Trevor Swartz, redshirt junior Francesco Moore and junior Andrew Gutman all tallied assists in the win.
In goal, freshman keeper Trey Muse made one save on the afternoon to record his NCAA-leading 12th shutout on the year. Muse and the Hoosiers have not allowed a goal in the last 779:33 minutes of play dating back to a 1-1 draw with No. 18 Michigan on Sept. 13.
In the 21st minute, the Hoosiers used a great bit of team play to get on the scoreboard. After a nice defensive play from Swartz, he found Dorsey on the right side.
The freshman played a great through-ball to his classmate Toye to give him a breakaway. Toye calmly buried his effort from eight-yards out, beating the OSU goalie to the right. Toye's seventh goal of the year gave IU a 1-0 lead.
In the first half, the Hoosiers out-shot the Buckeyes, 9-3, with IU getting three shots on-goal to just one for OSU. Corner kicks were 4-2 for Indiana.
Just over 10 minutes in to the second half, Toye struck again. Working on the left side, Moore played the ball to Gutman, who made a great run to get in to the box. The junior played a cross to Toye, who didn't miss from four-yards out. Toye's second goal of the match gave Indiana it's winning margin of 2-0.
For the match, IU out-shot the Buckeyes, 20-4, getting eight shots on-goal to just one for Ohio State. Corner kicks were 7-4 in favor of Indiana.
The No. 1 Hoosiers will hit the road to play in-state rival and No. 16-ranked Butler on Wednesday, Oct. 18. Kickoff in Indianapolis is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.
