Game Notes: Indiana at No. 18/19 Michigan State

Setting The Scene
• Indiana (3-3, 0-3 B1G East) kicks off a two-game road trip at No. 18/19 Michigan State (5-1, 3-0 B1G East) on Saturday, Oct 21. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. EDT at Spartan Stadium (75,005; Natural Grass) on ABC.
• The Old Brass Spittoon has been awarded to the IU-MSU winner since the trophy's inception in 1950.
• With their 24-21 overtime victory over the No. 17/16 Spartans last season (Oct. 1), the Hoosiers won the Old Brass Spittoon for the first time since 2006.
• Michigan State is Indiana's fourth-ranked opponent in its first seven games, a Big Ten high.
• This is the fifth time IU has met at least four top 25 foes in its opening seven contests (1950, '51, '53, '60).
• MSU is the Hoosiers 14th top 20 opponent in their last 29 ballgames, the most in the conference.
The Coaches
• Tom Allen made his debut as Indiana head coach at the 2016 Foster Farms Bowl. He was named IU's 29th head coach on Dec. 1, 2016. The New Castle, Ind., native joined the Hoosiers as associate head coach/defense on Jan. 15, 2016. A 2016 Broyles Award nominee, Allen engineered one of the top defensive turnarounds in the country, as Indiana improved substantially in every major statistical category. (full bio on page 17)
• Mark Dantonio is 95-43 (.688) in his 11th season as Michigan State head coach. Dantonio served as Cincinnati's head coach from 2004-06 and carries an overall record of 113-60 (.653).

• Indiana took No. 17/16 Michigan to overtime for the second time in three years last weekend.
• The Hoosiers limited the Wolverines to just 58 passing yards.
• IU has allowed fewer than 100 yards passing in back-to-back games for the first time since 1989.
• Indiana held U-M under 100 passing yards in back-to-back seasons (59 on Nov. 19, 2016).
• The Hoosiers scored 10 points in the final stanza, the first fourth quarter points tallied vs. Michigan in 2017. IU put 17 on the scoreboard in the second half, three more than the Wolverines had allowed all season.
• Fifth-year senior safety Chase Dutra recorded a career-high in solo tackles with 12 and matched a career-high with 13 overall, his fourth-career double-digit game.
• Fifth-year senior kicker Griffin Oakes hit two field goals, including a 46-yarder to send the game to overtime as time expired, to become the first kicker in program history to reach 60 field goals.
• Redshirt junior return specialist J-Shun Harris II pushed his season total in punt return yardage to 256 with his 74 yards. He is tied for sixth place on the Indiana single-season list.
• Redshirt junior wide receiver Luke Timian set a career-high in receiving yards with 95 on seven receptions.
• IU is second nationally averaging 7.0 three-and-outs per game.
