Kopel Named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer goalkeeper Bethany Kopel has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday. It's the first honor of the Novi, Mich. native's career and the first weekly award for Indiana this season.
"As a freshman, she's grabbed hold of that leadership role very, very early on for us," said head coach Amy Berbary. "Our entire team respects her and we look to her to provide that spark for us."
Kopel has collected 82 saves on the year, good for third in the Big Ten and 34th nationally. Amongst freshmen goalkeepers, her 82 saves rank sixth in the country. In addition, Kopel leads the nation in goalkeeper minutes played with 1610:00.
Over the weekend, Kopel collected 17 total saves while playing all 200 minutes in goal as the Hoosiers went 1-0-1.
In Indiana's 2-1 victory against Iowa on Thursday, Kopel registered a career-high 12 saves, the most for a Hoosier in a single game since Sarah Stone had 12 against Penn State in 2015. The 12 saves were also the most by any Big Ten goalkeeper this season. Kopel, who faced 22 total Hawkeye shots, picked up eight of her saves in the second half.
"She was phenomenal for us back there on Thursday," said Berbary. "We ask her to make one big save for us in each half and in this game, she made three or four. She held strong and she provides such a great foundation for us behind our extremely hard-working backline. Each save she made gave the team that boost we needed to push forward and continue to work to capture the win."
On Sunday, after surrendering an early goal to Nebraska, Kopel collected five saves as the Hoosiers drew with the Huskers, 1-1.
Kopel and the Hoosiers return to action on Saturday night as they play host to Rutgers at 5 p.m.
