BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 1–ranked Indiana University men's soccer team defeated in-state rival Evansville, 4-0, on Tuesday night at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind.
The victory was the 100th for IU head coach Todd Yeagley and improved the Hoosiers to 9-0-2 on the season overall. The undefeated start in the team's first 11 matches is the sixth in program history. Indiana's 15th-straight win over the Purple Aces drops Evansville to 5-4-1 on the year.
Indiana has scored 15 goals in the last four matches, pushing the Hoosiers' total to 29 on the season - the most in the first 11 matches since the team also scored 29 in 1999.
Freshman Mason Toye scored a pair of goals to lead the Hoosiers, while junior Andrew Gutman had a goal and an assist in the victory. Freshman Thomas Warr netted the fourth IU goal, while redshirt junior Trevor Swartz and junior Rece Buckmaster each had an assist.
Freshman goalkeeper Trey Muse made two saves and posted his NCAA-leading ninth shutout of the season. Indiana's five-straight shutouts matches the program record, last achieved in 2007. The nine shutouts in the team's first 11 matches are the most since 1979, while the two goals allowed in that stretch are also the fewest since 1979.
IU struck early on Tuesday night on a tremendous shot off the foot of Toye. In the sixth minute, Gutman made a nice run down the left side of the pitch, passing to an open Toye. The freshman turned to find space and cracked a curler from 25-yards out, beating the Evansville goalie to the far-right post. Toye's fifth goal of the season gave the Hoosiers an early, 1-0 lead.
At the halftime break, Indiana maintained a 1-0 advantage. In the first 45 minutes, the Hoosiers out-shot the Purple Aces, 9-2, getting four shots on-goal to just one for UE. Corner kicks were even at 2-2.
In the 58th minute, the Hoosiers doubled the lead off a corner kick. Swartz played a beautiful ball to the back post, finding an open Gutman, who buried the header from five-yards out. Gutman's fifth goal of the year pushed the Hoosiers' lead to 2-0.
Toye netted his second of the match in the 68th minute for the Hoosiers, cleaning up the rebound off a Buckmaster shot that the UE keeper saved, but was unable to hold on to. Toye's score from just three-yards out was his team-leading sixth of the season.
Finally, in the 89th minute, Warr brought the scoring to an end, capitalizing on an Evansville turnover. The freshman streaked down the right side, beating the Purple Aces' goalie to net his second score of the year and give IU the team's winning margin of 4-0.
For the match, Indiana out-shot Evansville, 23-5, getting 12 shots on-goal to two for the Purple Aces. Corner kicks were even at 5-5.
The No. 1-ranked Indiana Hoosiers will head east to face Big Ten rival Penn State on Saturday, Oct. 7. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET and the match will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
