EVANSTON, Illinois – The Indiana men's golf team got off to a strong start on Sunday at the Windon Memorial Classic at the Evanston Golf Club, posting scores of 277 and 283 to sit in fourth place as a team at even par through 36 holes. Jake Brown is tied for first place individually at 3-under par to lead the IU contingent.
The Hoosiers trail Penn State for first place by just three strokes while Miami (Ohio) is 1-under as a team but still has four players that need to finish their second round that was suspended due to darkness.
Indiana was able to get a team effort right from the start and that has led to the strong overall performance through the first 36 holes. Redshirt junior Jake Brown is leading the way at 3-under par through his first two rounds after recording scores of 68 and 69, the seventh and eighth time in his IU career he has logged a round in the 60s. He closed the 2015 Windon Memorial with a final round 62 at Lake Shore CC.
Brown's opening round 68 featured four birdies and two bogeys and he closed by playing his final 11 holes in 2-under par. In round two, he used birdies on holes 11, 12 and 14 to get back under par after a double bogey and eight pars on the front nine on his way to a 1-under par score of 69.
Jack Sparrow, who is playing in his first tournament of his junior season in the Cream and Crimson, made a splash in his opening round with a 1-under par score of 69, his fourth career round in the 60's at Indiana. He was incredibly steady throughout the round, carding two birdies, one bogey and 15 pars. In round two, he registered three birdies and three bogeys to finish at even par for the round and 1-under par overall, which puts him in a tie for sixth individually.
Senior Brendon Doyle made it three Hoosiers with under par scores in round one, using two birdies and one bogey to card a 69. He moved under par with a birdie on hole No. 6 and then recorded pars on the remaining 12 holes. His second round score of 72 put him at 1-over par for the tournament and a tie for 16th.
Brock Ochsenreiter used three birdies and four bogeys to card a 71 in his opening round and then followed that up with a 72 in his second round to leave him in a tie for 26th.
Freshman Ethan Shepherd was able to battle his way to a round of 2-over par 72 to start the day – including an eagle on the par 5 sixth hole. In round two, a pair of double bogeys proved to be too much to overcome and he posted a 77 and is nine over par after two rounds.
Another freshman, Evan Yakubov, is also competing this weekend but only as an individual. He played his first 12 holes in round one in 4-over par but used birdies on the fifth and sixth holes to finish at 2-over par 72. Starting on the back nine, Yakubov was 6-over par through his first nine holes. But he made the turn and birdied his 10th hole and then posted an eagle on the fifth hole – his final hole before his round was suspended due to darkness.
The second round is not official for all 15 teams since seven groups were not able to finish their second round before darkness set in. Those seven groups will return Monday morning to finish their second round. The final round will get underway at 11:00 a.m. ET. Fans can follow along with hole-by-hole live scoring on GolfStat.com.
