MADISON, Wis. – Indiana Women's Soccer battled Wisconsin to a 0-0 draw Sunday afternoon in Madison as freshman goalkeeper Bethany Kopel collected seven saves in the contest.
"We executed our game plan today near perfectly, except for the one piece that counts which is putting the ball in the back of the net," said head coach Amy Berbary. "On the other side of the field, Bethany has been solid for us and she had an outstanding performance today. She's bailed us out in other games but I thought her presence and voice in the back pushed us to another level."
Both teams had plenty of chances to end the stalemate as they combined for 34 shots, with 14 of those coming from the Hoosiers. Redshirt junior Mykayla Brown had four attempts for Indiana (5-7-3, 1-4-2 Big Ten) while sophomore Chandra Davidson added three.
The first half saw the Badgers (9-3-2, 3-2-2 Big Ten) outshoot Indiana, 7-6, including a 2-0 advantage in shots on goal. Kopel made a pair of saves in the first 45 minutes, including a great stop near the left post in the 34th minute on an attempt from Gabby Lawlor.
One of Wisconsin's most dangerous looks came in the 28th minute as the wind carried a blocked ball all the way back to Kopel from 30 yards out, but she was able to push it out of danger.
Indiana's best first-half chance happened in the final moments as Davidson connected with junior Abby Allen in the box. Allen earned a corner with the resulting service ending in a blocked shot from freshman Melanie Forbes.
Sophomore forward Sydney Kilgore made a couple great plays for the Hoosiers on the defensive side in her first start of her career. After Wisconsin's Maia Cella got loose in the box as Kopel came off her line in the 62nd minute, Kilgore blocked her shot inside the right post.
"Today was a battle," said Kilgore. "It was very physical and I thought our midfield did a great job winning the first balls, which helped us set up offensively throughout the game. We had some really good chances, especially late."
The Hoosiers put up their first shot on goal in the 66th minute as Brown's attempt was saved by Wisconsin goalkeeper Caitlyn Clem.
Indiana continued to press, earning four corners in nine minutes. Clem's best stop of the day came against Davidson, who fired in a shot from long range and forced the keeper to make a diving stop to her left as she tipped the ball out of harm's way.
The Badgers held a 5-1 shot advantage in the first overtime, but the game was kept scoreless due to three tremendous saves from Kopel. After Becca Harrison's shot was stopped, a dangerous attempt by Dani Rhodes was sent it, forcing Kopel to dive to her left. Rhodes led the Badgers with six attempts on the day.
Wisconsin's most threatening attempt of the game came with just 17 seconds remaining in the first overtime as Kopel tipped a look by Cameron Murtha off the crossbar.
The final 10 minutes was a different story for IU's attack as the Hoosiers post a 4-2 shot advantage. Junior Maya Piper put up a pair of looks, while Davidson earned a Hoosier corner as her attempt was saved by Clem and then pushed out of play. However, it was Brown who nearly broke through for the Hoosiers as her shot in the 109th minute just barely stayed wide right.
Indiana returns home this week as the Hoosiers play host to Iowa on Thursday night, followed by a Sunday afternoon battle against Nebraska. Admission to all Indiana Women's Soccer games is free of charge.
