WESTFIELD, Ind. – The No. 1-ranked Indiana University men's soccer team came up short in the Big Ten Tournament Championship on a rainy, Sunday afternoon in Westfield, Ind. at Grand Park, as No. 24 Wisconsin won the tournament title in penalty kicks.
The match finished as a 0-0 draw for both squads, with the Badgers taking home the trophy in penalty kicks, 4-2.
With the result, the Hoosiers remain the only undefeated team in the nation with a record of 15-0-5 on the year. IU is also the only team in the country to have never trailed in a match this season. Wisconsin earns the Big Ten's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with a mark of 10-4-5.
IU posted the team's NCAA-leading 16th shutout of the season on Sunday, the most for the Hoosiers in a season since 2001. In goal, freshman keeper Trey Muse made two saves.
Indiana controlled the match from the first whistle, out-shooting the Badgers, 24-7, with IU getting eight shots on-goal to just two for Wisconsin. Corner kicks were 11-5 for the Hoosiers.
Offensively, freshman Mason Toye matched his school record for shots in a Big Ten Tournament match he set against Penn State on Nov. 6, firing off 11 attempts. His 11 shots are tied for the second-most in school history overall, one behind Will Bruin's mark of 12 set in 2010.
The Badgers never made a concerted effort to throw men in to the offensive third, allowing the Hoosiers to control possession for not only regulation, but both overtime periods. Combined, IU out-shot Wisconsin, 7-1, in the two overtime sessions alone.
In the penalty shootout, both teams converted in the first round, but IU saw both of its attempts in the second and third go wanting, allowing the Badgers to take the advantage and win the title, 4-2.
With the Big Ten Tournament over, the Hoosiers will now await their postseason fate. IU is looking to make the NCAA Tournament for 31st-straight year and for the 42nd time overall in program history. If IU earns a top-16 seed for the 13th time in the last 15 seasons, the Hoosiers will receive a bye in the first round and would host a NCAA Tournament match at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium on Sunday, Nov. 19.
The NCAA DI Men's Soccer Selection Show is scheduled to stream live on Monday, Nov. 13 at 1:00 pm. ET on NCAA.com.
