BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 2 Indiana University men's soccer team defeated the New Hampshire Wildcats, 2-1, on Saturday night in the third round of the NCAA Tournament at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind.
With the victory, the IU improves to 17-0-5 on the season overall and remains the lone unbeaten team in the nation. With the loss, New Hampshire's season comes to an end with a record of 13-4-5.
The No. 2 Hoosiers will next host No. 7 Michigan State in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, Dec. 1 at 7:00 p.m. ET at Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind. This will be the first time IU has hosted an Elite Eight game since beating Tulsa 4-0 in the 2004 NCAA Tournament.
Indiana advances to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the 25th time in program history and for the first time since 2012. The team's 17 victories on the year are the most for the Hoosiers since 2003 when IU finished with a mark of 17-3-5 en route to winning the school's sixth NCAA title.
Cory Thomas and Francesco Moore had goals for the Hoosiers in the victory, while Rece Buckmaster tallied an assist. In goal, freshman goalkeeper Trey Muse made a pair of saves.
Indiana struck early, taking a 1-0 lead over the Wildcats in the 11th minute. Working on the right side, Buckmaster did well to find space, crossing the ball to the center of the 18-yard box. The cross found Thomas, who buried his header from six-yards out to the right post, giving IU the lead.
In the 65th minute, Spencer Glass made a great run on a counter-attack and had the goalie 1-on-1. But before he could take a shot, Glass was taken down from behind inside the 18-yard box and the Hoosiers were awarded a penalty kick.
Moore stepped to the spot for IU and calmly converted, scoring his third goal of the year to give Indiana a 2-0 lead over the Wildcats.
New Hampshire pulled one back in the 77th minute on a goal from Jacob Gould, but it would not be enough for the Wildcats, as IU went on to win, 2-1.
For the match, New Hampshire edged IU in shots, 8-7, and in shots on-goal, 3-2. Corner kicks were even at 3-3.
Tickets for Friday's match are $10 for adults and $5 for youth (18 & under) and can be purchased at IUHoosiers.com.
Indiana University students will get in free as IU Athletics will purchase their tickets for each round of the NCAA Tournament that the Hoosiers host. Students must show student ID at the ticket window to redeem free ticket.
