BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University men's soccer's Grant Lillard was named one of 15 semifinalists for the 2017 MAC Hermann Trophy, United Soccer Coaches announced on Tuesday. The semifinalists were determined based on voting by NCAA DI soccer coaches.
Lillard was also named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List last season. In the storied history of Indiana men's soccer, an IU player has been named the national player of the year 11 times. Included on that list are both IU head coach Todd Yeagley and associate head coach Brian Maisonneuve.
The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year. For more information about the MAC Hermann Trophy, including a list of past winners, visit MACHermannTrophy.org.
Three men's finalists will be named on December 8 in conjunction with the NCAA College Cup semifinals in Philadelphia. The 2017 MAC Hermann Trophy banquet will be held at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on Jan. 5, 2018 to formally announce this year's winners.
The 2017 season has been a stellar one for Lillard, as the Hinsdale, Ill. native was unanimously named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and First-Team All-Big Ten. Starting all 22 matches so far this season at centerback, Lillard has been the leader of the IU defense that leads the nation with 17 shutouts and four goals allowed.
Offensively this season, Lillard has totaled two goals and two assists, scoring the match winners for the Hoosiers against Santa Clara and Old Dominion.
Lillard has also been a standout in the classroom, earning 2016 Second-Team Scholar All-America honors, as well as First-Team Scholar All-Region and Academic All-Big Ten accolades.
Lillard and the No. 2 Indiana Hoosiers will next host No. 7 Michigan State in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, Dec. 1 at 7:00 p.m. ET at Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind.
Tickets for Friday's match are $10 for adults and $5 for youth (18 & under) and can be purchased at IUHoosiers.com.
Indiana University students will get in free as IU Athletics will purchase their tickets for each round of the NCAA Tournament that the Hoosiers host. Students must show student ID at the ticket window to redeem free ticket.
