BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Redshirt junior Katherine Receveur was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Year for the 2017 cross country season. She was selected by a unanimous selection process in a vote of the league coaches.
The Louisville, Ky. native became the second woman in Hoosier history to earn the honors of Big Ten Athlete of the Year. Michelle Dekkers, three-time Big Ten Athlete of the Year, was the first Hoosier to earn this honor from 1988-90.
It was a record setting 2016-17 season for Receveur, earning honors for every meet she competed in. She was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week three times this season, which marks a first in Hoosier history. She won the Big Ten individual title, which earned her first-team All-Big Ten honors. She won the Great Lakes Regional title, which makes her the second Hoosier to do so. She placed 20th at the NCAA Championships, which earned her career-second cross country All-American honor.
The redshirt junior earned her first Big Ten Athlete of the Week nomination for her performance at the Battle of Beantown at Boston College, where she placed second overall in the women's 5K with the time of 17:03. Her efforts aided Indiana to tie for second place, which elevated the program to its highest every ranking in the USTFCCCA polls, No. 14 in the country.
Receveur earned her second Big Ten Athlete of the Week nomination for her record setting performance at the Sam Bell Invitational at Indiana University. Receveur finished first overall in the women's 6K with the time of 20:14.08, which, at the time, set an all-time record on the IU Championships Cross Country 6K Course. The record was previously held by Emily MacLeod of Michigan State (20:24.70). She earned her third Big Ten Athlete of the Week nomination for her performance at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational. Receveur was the first Big Ten athlete to cross the finish and the 10th overall with the time of 20:00.5, which was a 14 second improvement from her record setting 6K time at the Sam Bell Invitational.
Receveur started her postseason bid on Oct. 29 when she earned the Big Ten individual title, earning first-time All-Big Ten honors and set another new all-time record on the IU Championships Cross Country 6K Course. Receveur is the second woman in Hoosier history to win the Big Ten title, last by Michelle Dekkers in 1990. Receveur set the all-time record for the second time this season with the time of 20:10.3, which will remain the all-time since this is the last season that the current IU Championships Cross Country Course will be used due to construction.
Continuing her postseason on Nov. 10, she won the Great Lakes Regional title, earning her spot at the NCAA Championships. Receveur is the second woman in Hoosier history to win the Great Lakes title, last by Kim Betz in 1987.
Closing out the 2016-17 season on Nov. 18 when she was the first Big Ten athlete to cross the finish and 20th overall with the time of 19:56.5 at the NCAA Championships in Louisville, Ky., which earned her the title of All-American for the second year in a row.
